Guitar Tech Help Needed. Contains Gibson ES335 Dot Content

Post by Goslats »

Bridge P/U went out and took the '80 Dot to my tech. He got it working by resoldering sumbin'. Took it home. Put on new strings and whirled the dials 'round and 'round. Realized the Bridge P/U with toggle in the middle position when turned to 0 does not allow any volume. Other than that it seems the knobs work fine. What could it be? Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks! :welcome:

in the middle , if turned down all the way it will go off = normal

Yep, in the middle for the toggle, everything works fine until the bridge P/U is turned to zero. Each toggle position works fine on its own. The blend for treble/bass on the volume seems fine. The blend for the treble/bass with the tone controls seems fine. It's only when the volume of the bridge P/U is turned towards zero that seems wrong with the toggle in the middle. That's ok and as it should be? Want to be sure I'm making it clear. Thanks

hmm pretty sure the neck volume would / should turn it off also .

Should the neck P/U control turn the volume all the way off also? Now the bridge P/U volume control turns off the volume when toggled in the midddle, but the neck P/U vol control does not turn the volume all the way off toggled in the middle. Want to make sure I'm clear. B-)

pretty sure yes it should if using "Standard Gibby controls" or "dependent volume controls "but it may have been rewired , many players do rewire them . Are you the original owner ? Only way to be sure is pull out the harness , easier said then done on a dot , but it may be worth it to do some research into the many choices of custom wiring and pick one that you think will be the best for you and have your guy rewire it .

Thanks fretless. I'm not trying for a custom wiring job, just wondering if he did something not right when resoldering a week or so ago. Need someone with a 335 to try theirs and see if the volume goes out when toggle is in the middle and bridge P/U vol control is turned down to zero. Then see if volume stays on with neck P/U is turned down to zero with bridge vol set at 5 or 6 . Thanks!

Yes. In the middle position, either volume turned all the way down will result in an on/off like effect. Ditto on a 335 or LP or any guitar wired like that,

Hi Atrox. The weird thing then is that the volume does not cut out when the bridge P/U is turned down to zero with the toggle in the middle and bridge P/U vol at any kind of volume. Is that unusual?

As already posted, midlle position, volume at zero = no volume.

Why would you want to turn the bridge p/u to zero in the middle position anyways?

I understand Mesa/Kramer, so toggle middle with volume at zero on neck P/U is the issue then beacuse I still get sound through the amp. A problem, or not an issue if everything else seems ok . "Why would you want to turn the bridge p/u to zero in the middle position anyways?" It's not that I ever do that.....I just stumbled upon it and wondered if there is a problem with the wiring.

He probably wired them to the pot in different ways. You can send the P/U hot to the center lug or the remaining lug and they would still work. The bridge is probably on the end lug and the neck is probably on the center lug.
