Billy,
Suggestions on routing? I have no idea what the way to route all this fuckery.

I want to take advantage of Noise Suppression. However my wah has boost so there is a gainstage there. If I were to sort of copy your routing I think it should look like this: Guitar into EVH Input. EVH send to tuner > wah > octaland > Duellist > Revelation > out to front of amp. Amp FX send to EVH return. EVH Output (EFX L) > Collider > Spark > Amp return. This look right to you?!?

To save your presets: Press and Hold Bank A/B. Press Setup. Use the Depth arrows to choose the location. Press Bank A/B again. Keep in mind EVH presets cannot be saved to other locations.

And yeah this thing is deep. It's nearly impossible to get started without the manual. And I am a rack guy so I am used to stuff like this. Recently, I figured out an entire Fractal FX8 without the manual. But I struggled big time with this one. I am at the point where I can navigate it now but still not 100% comfortable. The User Interface on this is just not that great.

I am heading home now and I will share some the Presets I created so far and some navigation tips. I just need to be in front of the unit.

Ok so some setting as promised.

This is my basic/"always on" sound, which is just a basic delay mixed low:

DDL1 and DDL2 are on

DDL1

DDL2

I have my Modulation turned on on both DDLs

This is my Lead sound, again, both DDLs are on:

DDL1:

DDL2:

Modulation is turned on on DDL1 only. also, on the Master section I am turning my Out Gain up to +2. That gives me a volume boost of the leads.

This is my "Chorused" sound I am using on clean parts:

DDL1:

DDL2:

Modulation is on on both sides.

Finally had a chance to sit down with your settings tonight. These modulated cleans are awesome! Modified your settings slightly here. Turned up to 400ms and lowered output a little, but left DD2 the same.

Billy are you using the filter button at all, or just the mod? Also your lead delay is fucking long. :D Do you use that long of a delay for leads in faster songs too? I'm going to try the longer delay for leads at practice tomorrow but slightly worried it will be too much. :hmm:

I have the Filter off for now. Mostly because I still can't fully figure out how to use it :D

As for the delay time, 798/398ms were Eddie's delay times during the FUCK/Balance era. I remember seeing was a picture of his rack in a Guitar World magazine back in '91 and I memorized the delay settings and never forgot them lol

So I modified those settings a bit to make them work in a mono environment. I shortened the longer delay to 769ms and mixed it low (out gain is only 10) so it doesn't get in the way of the fast leads. The shorter one should be the one you hear the most and the longer is just additional ambience in the back.

Usually if I'm playing a single, regular delay I set the time around 450-500ms. I believe my DD500 lead sound is set at 485ms IIRC. But I got this pedal to do the EVH thing and Eddie's dual delay sound always had a longer one mixed in.

Well shit I feel like I’m missing a setting cause the longer delay was pretty loud. I’m wondering if my output/input gain is off in the master settings?

Speaking of, I’m also confused about the master setting for output gain. That seems to make the signal louder whether I have a delay on or not. I want the pedal to be unity gain while off and then set the lead delay for a volume boost like you mention but apparently I haven’t figured it out yet.

I def want to try to make this work cause the FUCK/Balance tone is my new grail. :D

Also, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me with this!!! I’m clearly a fish out of water with this digital fx and loop stuff.

Also, have you noticed any weird phasing on delay trails? I have the phase button off, but sometimes, especially on double stops that I slide out of, delay trails will get this weird phasey sound to them.

I thought maybe it was byproduct from two stereo delays collapsed into mono but could also be my Master settings not being correct.

Yes, the Master affects the patch whether the delay is on or not. What I do is after my solo, I switch back to my "rhythm/always on" short delay patch, which has the master on 0. Then if I need to, I will bypass the delay from there.

I am not noticing any phasing. I found that while running in mono, the Parallel 1 configuration sound the best. If you have the delays in series, that could be the problem and maybe also why your long delay is too loud.

I also stopped using the pedal loop and I am just using the pedal like a regular delay in the amp's effects loop now. I found that the Noise Gate still works really well like that and it made the guitar tone more natural. It's also easier for me to swap different delays on the board when I need to.

I think the pedal's loop is more for the W/D/W thing really, in a mono setup the pedal sounds better without it.

The other thing to look at is the Direct Signal level. I found that the stock setting of 60 is a bit too low and makes the sound too wet. So I'm setting mine to 100. That means 100% of the dry signal passing through, which sound right to me. Then I just set the delay Out level based on that setting.

You're not alone. I am used to rack and effects loop and this delay is kicking my ass to dial in. This pedal is deep. We're learning it together.

Ok I’m dumb, I thought Master would affect the entire pedal no matter what patch I was using. That makes way more sense.

And damn I’m glad you mentioned Parallel 1 cause I’m pretty sure they’re all in series right now! Soon as I get home I will change that and save presets.

Will def try setting up normally instead of running everything through EVH loop. TBH it’s a bit of cable routing nightmare doing it that way anyways. For some reason I thought the gate wouldn’t work at all if you routed it normally. :hmm:

And I also will play with Direct Signal. I haven’t touched it all so it’s still at stock setting.

This was an extremely informative post, thank you Sir! :rawk:

OK Billy, I think you cracked the code for me with those two tweaks. Just to confirm, this is the setting you use to boost the volume for solos:

And this is the direct signal you to told me to turn up to 100:

Ok, using your exact rhythm settings in beginning. Switch to Cole-ider at :45 for comparison which honestly is setup a lot like EVH 8 preset, maybe just slightly longer. At 1:44 i switch to your longer delay lead tone sound. Just blasting out some BCB riffs here. :D

At 1:33 I click off Collider and switch back to EVH rhythm sound and the difference is more noticeable to me. EVH sounds great. Collider is going nowhere cause I'll use it for verb which will stay all the time.

It's amazing how much better it sounds with those two settings changed! With those adjustments you helped change my mind about this pedal. I was thinking I needed to send it back, now I'm legit blown away!!! So where did you save your patches? I put rhythm on C.01, lead on C.02, and mod cleans on C.03.

Once again your nerdom has saved my ass. Thank you, Sir.

Yep I saved my sounds on Bank C too lol

But to be completely honest, I'm still not 100% sure I'll keep this pedal on my board.
I'm NOT returning it, because it does what it does better than anything else on the market. For the EVH/80s sounds, there is nothing better.

BUT it's not versatile. The 80s "sheen" is there no matter how you tweak it. It's like you took the DeLorean back to 1985 and the flux capacitor broke and there's no getting out of the 80s lol

I only have room for 1 big ass delay pedal on my main board so I haven't decided which one will stay there.

But regardless this pedal is most definitely a keeper.

I returned the EVH. In mono it just didn’t sound as good to me as the Collider, especially in the band mix and unless I’m doing stereo or w/d/w it seemed overkill for my delay needs.

I need chorus/flanger/other timed based fx so now I’m thinking about Eventide H90. :hmm:
