Daddy Mayer reigns supreme

Post by spawnofthesith »

Went to Dead & Co for the first, and unfortunately last time this past weekend (I know shocker for me, I’ve just always had excuses and put it off)

God damn. What an experience. Extremely upset I waited til the final tour to to. Hopefully whatever the next chapter Bobby has in mind still slaps

Bobby is the man, Mayer is a beast, chimenti has fingers or fire, otiel and Jay lane be locked in on that deep psychedelic groove Micky heart be doing crazy shit in drums:space and he even dropped the Og rap verse on fire on the mountain. 10/10 experience and yes the drugs were good but it would’ve been excellent without too

I saw them twice in a row at Fenway Park in 2017, just before quitting my job and starting my own company.

Mayer might be kinda douchy but that boy can play. No doubt about it.

How was the crowd?

Crowd was chill, I was up in the stands rolled with a band we play with from time to time so I had a chill squad. Little old lady behind me said she’d been seeing the dead since ‘68 and kept talking about how she was good friends with Owsley lol

Yeah man, that fame lottery is a dream for most of us although it's probably more achievable than buying a winning Powerball ticket.

I saw John Mayer back in 2003. Girl I was dating at the time really liked Room For Squares and had never been to a proper concert before so I took her. I think Heavier Things had just come out. I expected her to have a good time. I did not expect to be impressed by his playing which I was. Dude was ripping up blues licks and riffs like nobodies business. I’m not a fan of a lot of his music since those two early albums but the guy can play for sure.

I’ll actually be seeing him two nights in Europe next year. The bigger draw for me is his opening act but I can be entertained by Mayer too. He’s gonna be solo so I hope he can keep it spicy by himself, which I’m sure he can,

FWIW, I had lunch with Nir Zidkyahu, the drummer from Room For Squares. I was chilling at Sweetwater, and the president of Sonor was like, "kahn vee seet weet youu?" I'm like "sure. I'm a famous post-rock hair-metal lounge singer. I'm a big deal." Then, I find out this other guy is John Mayer's drummer. I'm like "fuck."

literally like nobodies business. i cant get into his regular albums either, but his cheesy songs arent as cheesy live and when he is in blues mode theres few ever that can hang with him imo. he knows tone too. i know a few deadheads who couldnt stand him and couldnt believe the dead got him, then they saw him and wouldnt shut up about how incredible he was. i gotta check out some of these recent dead shows

Dude I’m telling you. I picked up one of his live CDs, Any Given Thursday, years ago because it’s set was super similar to what he played in Detroit when I saw him. And there’s a 10 minute version of Neon that closes that album and it’s fucking awesome. It turns into an extended jam during the middle and has a much cooler intro. And I sure as fuck can’t play it but I love listening to it.

I am up in WA to see the two Gorge shows, then road tripping down to SF for the last three concerts.

To get away with a 10-minute extended jam in front of an audience like his... think about how difficult that is. It's one thing to do that when you're Steve Vai and everyone in front of you is a guitar nerd. It would be hard NOT to jam.

But to pull that off in front of a crowd that is mostly non-musicians and mostly women... very difficult. In fact I think the last guy who pulled that off before Mayer was EVH... and Hendrix before him.

this album is on spotify, ill put it in my easy summer listening list. i remember watching one of his more recent concerts when we were locked down and it was like a clinic on tasty blues, they must have pulled it cause i cant find it now. the dude did it right, make music that packs arenas with 80% woman and then just do what you want live. Joining the dead was probably the best move he could have done for himself, every night now hes gaining literally 50 thousand new fans that will probably to continue to support him should he stay more down that jammy path.

Gatdamn what a trip... I just got home and it seems surreal to be back in the real world, lol. I've done a few tours where I follow a band for multiple shows, but that band has always been Phish, and it's been a couple decades since I've done so, lol. Been to the Gorge a bunch of times, but I've never seen it sold out. We missed the first two songs of night 1 set 1 because it took us 3 hours to get in the lot. Insane amount of people, but never felt too crowded on either night. I knew that over the course of 5 shows, I'd get every one of my favorite Dead tunes, so I wasn't stressing, just surrendered to the flow. Night 2 was epic. I'd seen Dead and Co a couple times before and enjoyed them, but they were absolutely on fire at the most fire venue in the country. There's something about making the trek to this remote place in the middle of nowhere, an hour away from the closest city, and everyone had to make a sacrifice to get there, so everyone is stoked, appreciative, and happy, even in 99 degree heat. Words don't really do it justice, nor do pictures. If you're a fan of music, you need to make the pilgrimage when your favorite band plays there.

We had 5 days and lots of miles to kill, so we bopped down the west coast to some of my favorite spots, staying with fam, friends, AirBnB's, and hotels.

Final three shows of the final tour commenced in SF at Oracle Park (where the Giants play). Pretty good sound considering it's a baseball stadium; I saw RHCP at Petco Park (where the Padres play) last year and the slapback was insufferable. Live Nation said that 70% of the tickets from the 3 day run were sold to non-northern Californians, we took the city over for a few days. The crowd was locked in and the energy was amazing for all three shows, but Sunday was an all-time setlist and one of the best shows I've ever been to.

This was by far the best post-Jerry Garcia version of the Grateful Dead that I've seen (Further, Phil and Friends, Ratdog, the Dead, Wolf Bros, etc), and I am sad it's come to an end, but smiling because I got to experience it. Lots of bands play Dead songs, but miss the whole unspoken communication / locked in grooves that this lineup seems to excel at. I don't know what the next lineup will be but I am confident that the music will carry on for generations. Curious to see what John Mayer does next, but I hope he's got the bug and will continue to play Dead tunes in some fashion. He just looked like he was having way too much fun up there to give it up. People can hate on John Mayer all they want, but I'll instantly think less of them. I don't think he hit a bad note in all 5 shows, and he was doing some serious acrobatics. John Mayer is Dead to me, they could not have pulled this off with anyone else.

Did I mention the drone show from last night? Could easily do without fireworks forever if the show looks like this!

Wow!!!! Fuxk yeah Greg ya did good!! I’m jealous haha. I know I’m spoiled living right by red rocks but damn the gorge is on my bucket list for sure.

This final tour has been insane. I’m so glad I decided to finally go in Boulder and definitely kicking myself for having never gone before but maybe this was peak. Seeing dead tributes is an almost weekly ritual for me and I got to see Phil and Bobby play together at lockn 2017, but yeah Folsom was by far the greatest dead experience I’ve ever had

So glad you got to go hard on this final run dude, much love!! Hope there is a next chapter of some kind because I surely want more

Ugh I hate to be a hater but…. 2019-2021 I was so into goose but then they just died for me. Music seemed to get worse, ricks ego is insufferable and the crowd just sucks. So many other lower tier jam bands deserve to be way bigger than goose I just don’t understand
