My first attempt at Faux Binding

Post by GuitarBilly »

So I have this Wine Red Les Paul Studio that I blacked out the hardware. Today I was bored and decided to attempt to do a faux biding on it.

I watched some YT tutorials and went for it, with an exacto knife. But I think it turned out pretty good :)

Before:

After:

I still have to clean it up and smooth out the edges but I am happy with the results.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

You just remove the paint with a razor blade. I followed this video:

Lots of talking on it, but the actual process starts at 3:54

Jeez, why not just use pinstripe tape instead? It looks great but pinstripe is reversible?

Pinstripe won't hold up for the amount of use/gig I do with it. And I didn't want it to be reversible. It's not like it's a super expensive LP to begin with. And it looks way better IMHO :)

Yeah my inspiration was Jeff Blando's LP Studio that is pretty worn out. So the margin error was large. I didn't necessarily want a pristine looking job.

Looks much better. Do you simply scrape away the finish to expose the maple cap?

Yep. That's pretty much it. Just slowly work around the edges.
It was easier than I thought it would be.

Wow - that looks awesome!

Gonna look cool when you break that in. Why bother clear-coating it? Let it relic on it's own!

It does sound crazy when you put it like this lol

But it's not like I was using a chainsaw or something that could ruin the guitar. It's an exacto knife. The most damage it could do would be a few extra scratches, which is not a big deal if you're not working on a mint condition guitar and/or going for an worn-out look. :idk:

You did a nice job with that.

Jeff Blando is a real missed talent in that 80s rock era. Great singer as well as guitar player, and I like his gear choices with LP Studios and Crate Stealths. No show, all go

yeah he lives in Vegas and he used to gig locally a lot , that's how I became familiar with his playing. Really nice guy too.

He'd have had more success if he changed his name to Jeff Spicyo

Yeah I didn't know about him until I moved to Vegas. But the guy is great player and singer nonetheless and seem to make a living playing music so :idk: I don't know much about his career tbh.
I just think his LP is really cool so I gave it a go. Mine is still its own thing with the blacked out hardware etc... but I like this look. I think I will buy more LPs Studios in the future and do the same to them so I can have different pickups options etc. It's a lot cheaper than buying a Standard/Trad/Classic every time I need a slightly different LP.

But obviously my #1 and #2 are not going anywhere.
