NAD!!

Post by GuitarBilly »

Went to Atomic yesterday and picked up this little guy:

Image

EHX Mig 50. I have to say I am VERY impressed with. It is a little confusing initially because the channels are the opposite of a Plexi, channel I is the normal channel and channel II is the bright channel. And the channels are internally jumpered.
So at first it sounded fuzzy and weird, but once I figured it out, it absolutely cranks like a 50w Plexi. Just a little less gain and a bit darker. But not a bad way. This is definitely a worthy backup for my 1987x.

But the volume taper is a lot more gradual, the plexi starts distorting at around 1.5 on the volume. This stays clean until 4 or 5, so this can be also be used as an awesome pedal platform amp. I tried to run my Carl Martin Plexitone into it and it's really close to the cranked amp tone but at a much lower volume.

This is one hell of a sleeper amp. They go for $400-600 and man they do sound really close to a Marshall Plexi, maybe with a hint of Bassman/JTM45 too. I think the confusing layout turns a lot of people off.

I will make a clip of it later today and everyone is out of the house.
Guitars:

Nice! I have a soft spot for the Migs. The Mig100 has a pretty hefty girth to it and the Kranks are basically all more or less based on the 100H

yes, the old ones are cool too, but this is different from the old Sovteks. This is a NVM amp. The Sovteks were more or less based on the 800s.

Yes, sir - congrats. :thu:

I'll have to check the thread later to see the photo. For some reason, my employer blocks Imgur...

 I was hoping you had changed your mind on that Maz 18. Nice grab though, I’ve always heard great things about both the classic and newer Migs.

They're different. These are NVM amps.

It shouldn't be hard to remove the tolex. I am not sure what the wood underneath is though. But meh, it would look woody enough

Congrats! These are indeed great amps.

Looks like you got the MK I version as the newer MK II version comes with black plastic switches. Aside the tonal qualities I think the bias test points on the back are as well a cool feature and pretty rare for amps in this price range.

So I read more about the old Sovteks and I was wrong.

The Mig 50 has always been a NMV amp.

They had a Midget 50 and a Mig 60, which had a Master Volume. But not the Mig 50.

And the Mig 100 had a MV too.

Cool amps.

I remember when these were briefly popular in the early 2000s, but I think they got smothered once the boutique craze started to gain momentum.

I’ve only seen one IRL, but I’ve never actually heard one.

I think these are listed at $870 (CAD) brand new from Long & Mcquade, makes me tempted to give it a shot if it’s reasonably close to the 1987. Cool amp!

Yes. And that was a really great mod too. If I was still in California I'd consider sending it to him. Although I like the stock amp just fine.
