Is painted binding a bad idea

Post by GuitarBilly »

Well? What do you say?

By the way I'm not talking about doing it in a Les Paul Studio. I know that's a no-no.

But I have this white Jackson Star here. Great looking guitar but I wish it had black binding. :cop:

Please be gentle

For what it's worth, you could head to AutoZone and get some pinstriping and stick it on there as a faux binding.

I put some of this stuff on a jazzmaster I had a while back, and as long as you don't put it too close to the edge of the fretboard, it'll go on and stay on just fine. If you overlap the edge, your hand will snag on it and it'll start coming off.

And make sure you clean the surface really good (with rubbing alcohol) before applying. It's pretty picky about sticking on less-than-clean surfaces.

I'll just ask my wife to do. She's good at arts and crafts.

If I try it I'll end up pin striping my face, the furniture and the dog. But not the guitar.

I know my weaknesses

I would just order a custom already bound neck.

I'm assuming you're more concerned with binding the body rather than the neck right?

Yeah the neck is already bound. This would be for the body only.

I did a mockup with electrical tape yesterday and it didn't look as I thought it would so I'll probably just leave it alone

I think it's a great idea if you feel it'll add to the guitar visually.

I know I've been drawn to natural binding here lately, so painted, natural, or layered, I say go for it and show that bad boy off!
