First practice with the JCM900

Post by GuitarBilly »

I decided to take the 900 out to practice today to see how it would perform with the band. First thing I noticed is how much quieter the amp compared to the 1987x. I had the master on 7 on the 900, while the 1987x I had on 3 and with an attenuator

I used a run of the mill 1960 cab with 75s. Had to dial in some weird ass setting: bass and mids max and highs and presence off  But it sounded great like that so whatever. Practice went really well with it. Definitely an amp I can use live. It's a lot stiffer than the plexi or even the DSL but not in a bad way.

On a different note, I've been using this cab with 75s for practice and I'm really liking them again. I think I need to get a standard 1960B, since mine is loaded with V30 (which I also like).
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

Thanks for the report. Possibly volume issues due to old power tubes? I really like the 75's in the B cabs.

No I think that's just how they are. They come up late in the master volume, which is actually a great thing.

Seems impossible to find 1960 cabs for a decent price around here. In LA I could buy them for 300-400 any day.

For some reason I never got along with my 900. Navarro used them and I loved his stuff. For me that amp was always just MEH! Used mine with a 1960 B with Rola Blackbacks. Glad its working for you.

To be fair, I like my other amps better.
Coming from the non master volume amps, then the 800s, it's easy to see why these amps were not well liked.
And the DSL that came after is much better too. But the 900s have some cool tones in them.

Didn’t Navarro use DS-1s into his 900s too? Not sure I have anything that he played a 900 on unless he used them on One Hot Minute. I thought the two Janes albums were 800s.

Both the Jane's Addiction albums and the One Hot Minute were 900s. I think he uses a DS-1 as a boost, like Satch and Vai do.

You sure about Nothing’s Shocking? That was 88. I think he would have still been on an 800 then. Ritual being 900 wouldn’t surprise me.
