Re: Will Smith?
If we can be serious for a minute, Kareem Abdul Jabbar had a pretty interesting take on it:
Abdul-Jabbar argues the incident was more than just a slap to Rock, but rather a “slap to women.”
“By hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself — against words,” he states. “This patronizing, paternal attitude infantilizes women and reduces them to helpless damsels needing a Big Strong Man to defend their honor least they swoon from the vapors. If he was really doing it for his wife, and not his own need to prove himself, he might have thought about the negative attention this brought on them, much harsher than the benign joke. That would have been truly defending and respecting her.”
“This ‘women need men to defend them’ is the same justification currently being proclaimed by conservatives passing laws to restrict abortion and the LGBTQ+ community,” he continued, adding that Smith’s “self-serving acceptance speech” in which he talked about protecting his family in the same way his character in King Richard, for which he won an Oscar, was tone deaf.
“Those who protect don’t brag about it in front of 15 million people,” he explained. “They just do it and shut up. You don’t do it as a movie promotion claiming how you’re like the character you just won an award portraying. But, of course, the speech was about justifying his violence. Apparently, so many people need Smith’s protection that occasionally it gets too much and someone needs to be smacked.”
Abdul-Jabbar also argued that actions like Smith’s brings back a “Toxic Bro ideal” that can be damaging to young men, especially men of color. In fact, Smith's son, Jaden, would later go on Twitter after the incident, boastfully writing: "And That's How We Do It."
“Young boys — especially Black boys — watching their movie idol not just hit another man over a joke, but then justify it as him being a superhero-like protector, are now much more prone to follow in his childish footsteps,” he explained, adding, “One of the main talking points from those supporting the systemic racism in America is characterizing Blacks as more prone to violence and less able to control their emotions. Smith just gave comfort to the enemy by providing them with the perfect optics they were dreaming of.”

idk... lots to unpack there....
I don't agree with his take on him defending his wife, because there was nothing to defend her from, she wasn't being attacked at all. It was a joke, that's just what comedians do, they roast people in front of them, you can either laugh or let it bomb, but there is nothing on a joke that needs "defense" from. So I think he's off base there. He might have a point about men defending women but it doesn't apply here since no one was attacked.
I do agree that it sets a bad example/role model. There are a LOT of people that model themselves from movie and music stars - which is a bad idea at any level, but a lot of people will invariably do it anyway. So that's a problem for sure.
The main thing is he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. That's a problem. I don't think he should go to jail or anything (since Rock said he doesn't want to press charges) but at least take his Oscar away and ban him from the next year show. I don't know, something just to send a message that this is not okay. The guy just sat there like nothing happened and even gave a speech afterwards. That's nuts.

Her head is not shaved (for the sake of shaving it). Her hair is falling out due to a disease (alopecia), which is why she got so upset. I understand her point of view. She could have done what most women with her condition would have done (wore a wig) but she decided to go like that to send a message to other women suffering from the same disease that it is okay to deal with it openly. Then she gets laughed at by the host of the event. It's frustrating, I get it.
But it's still just a joke. Maybe something that the Smiths could have addressed after the show and asked Rock to issue a public apology, which I am sure he would have, I didn't see any malice on his part. But it's nothing that justifies a physical assault. Especially one that goes completely unpunished.

I disagree on your first point. I think Will Smith did feel that he was protecting his wife's honor in some chivalrous manner. Or maybe we agree and are just stating it differently.

As for the Oscar, I want him to keep it. I don't want Jada spending the next 20 years talking about how Will deserved the Oscar for best actor, like she has spent the last 20 years. This is the year that he finally wins, the Academy sat you front and center for the ceremony, the hosts mentioned you a couple of times from the stage. I guess that wasn't enough and they needed statues built of themselves on the stage.
Also, Will Smith has spent the last 20 years throwing himself out there as a role model. Since he started doing press for Ali. Just saying.

I don't think we disagree. I am sure he felt that way but it's ridiculous nonetheless.

This cracks me up. The most I saw on my feed was middle aged dorks talking about how dumb people are talking about celebrities while they are… talking about dumb celebrities while pretending they aren’t. Lol.
Also as dumb as this was it’s impossible to avoid something like this when it was literally plastered everywhere. I agree those kinda taking a stance one way or another is pure nonsense. I was just hoping for more carnage since that would have been REAL entertainment. But I sure saw a lot more than basic middle aged dorks talking about it. Basically the entire world.
This is where the Dave schtick of ripping on the people of a forum where you have 26k fucking posts. Jesus. Weren’t you banned for like 2 years? Hahah. . This is psychology 101 of people hating on others the very thing they hate about themselves but are reluctant to admit. I thought you moved on from this sort of thing?
But back to the topic. Cause it’s moved to a new narrative. That speech he gave after he won. Oh man. I didn’t realize that happened and now there are a billion clips of black folks and woke whiteys posting that speech with piano music or other “emotional “ music playing behind. . There isn’t enough cringe in any emoji, or even words, to display that ridiculousness. And he got a standing O?! Hahaha. Now that speech was an actor being an actor 1000%.
So yeah, I completely agree people shouldn’t be talking about such warped humanity that is this ultra rich celebrity. They are beyond retarded and the sooner the world moves on from what was Hollywood and the like, the better. I actually thought we were on our way to that….
Soooo you think that whole thing wasn't a staged attention grab by the hollywood folks? Got it

What a idiotic move by Will Smith and on national TV
It was a joke for F@cks sake that would have been forgotten in seconds, nobody would have remembered the joke, no 1.. Now EVERYONE knows that she has some mild alopecia and this has been blown up to what it is now.. Then Jayden Smith the son posts some nonsense on Twitter as well after the smack "This is how we do it"..
Chris Rock is probably 1/2 foot smaller and probably 40+ lbs lighter than Will Smith and took it like a champ and laughed it off, he absolutely has the right to press charges and sue for real $$ after being assaulted on national TV, what a mess
