Word Of Advice…

Post by andvari7 »

If you can avoid slipping on a front yard of ice, I’d strongly recommend you do so.

Two days ago, I did just that, and I broke my right humerus. For those who don’t know what a humerus is, it’s the big-ass bone in the upper arm. My shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand are all fine, and I’m going to experiment with positioning my guitars and basses, as soon as I get the opportunity to do so. As of right now, I do not require any surgery, but I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon next week, to determine the next course of treatment.

This injury has some serious repercussions, especially where my career is concerned. My days of moving batteries were already on the back nine; there is now a distinct possibility that they are over. If surgery is necessary, then I’m absolutely done.

The whole experience has left me, essentially, useless. I can’t work right now, I can’t drive right now, and I can’t take a shower.

Ice cleats are your friends: Wear them.

Thank you.

That sucks! Get well quick. Until then, enjoy the painkillers.

I once slipped on some icy steps, right on my spine. I swear that if it wasn't for the heavy leather jacket I was wearing, I would have cracked something.

A dozen OxyContin, a plaster splint that wants to move into uncomfortable positions, a sling that tries to Benoit me, and two horrible-smelling ACE bandages. Fun times.

Dude that royally sucks. I wish you a swift recovery and all the best. I agree, it’s deadly and one big ass reason I moved from the mid Atlantic. When I was 19 my chevette hit ice and went over a 90’ cliff. I cracked to vertebrae and broke the collar bone. I remember nothing but waking in the hospital. The car was flattened from the fall. It was out in the woods at night but a guy heard it and called the rescue team. I was in bed for 6 months. Fuck you ice.

ugh, that sucks - hope you have a speedy recovery.

i slipped on some ice once, where i saw my feet up in the air in front of my face  mildly bruised hip, but otherwise ok - i think my thick winter jacket saved me from more damage.

Update:

1. I don’t require surgery, as of yesterday’s appointment, and I’m no longer in a plaster splint. It’s a plastic and Velcro brace, and quite a bit of light compression.
2. I tried playing my bass, and that wasn’t happening.
3. I really need to get some of that compression tubing they used at the hospital, because I want to shower. Badly.
4. I can drive. Just not my truck.
5. I’ll be spending this down time to get my work life in order.

Mojo sent man. Here’s hoping the rest of the recovery goes smoothly.

Never seen a front yard of ice. Actually, I’ve never even seen snow fall from the sky.

I actually have some updates:

1. I am no longer wearing the brace, or compression tubing. I had been able to shower the whole time, and I bought the rolls of the tubing off of Amazon (with my FSA monies, no less), so changing the dressing was a welcome relief.
2. The redness and itching are mostly gone, even on the arm.
3. I’m in PT, and it’s going to hurt. Not like the injury, but it will be an ordeal.
4. Best part is: The whole thing, extraneous purchases (tubing, Voltaren, and Advil) aside, fell under worker’s comp, because it was in the course of expected product and vehicle maintenance - I would have had to do it at 4:30 the following morning, which could have been fatal - that I slipped on the ice. Now, it’s May, and the worst thing I have to deal with is a floodplain lawn.
5. I can play, and I will be doing so. Except that I will also be going back to work on Monday (potentially), and I just took my Hohner G3T, which is my travel guitar, in for service, because I don’t think I will have the time to fix the pickups. Same with the Fireman.
6. On the subject of the latter: I think the Seymour Duncan SH-2n is a damn fine neck pickup. It’s the SH-5 that is giving me gastritis. Shrill, quiet, and just plain wrong. I’m sure it would be fine, if I had wired the som’bitch right.

Glad you're doing better!!!!!!!!!

I'd chill with doing anything till the bone heals 100%.......

My ice story:

I was in Burlington, Vt. walking on the U.V. campus at night.
I stepped on a piece of black ice, and I still remember how freaking fast my legs went out from under me, and I crashed on my hip. Thank God, I was early twenties, and no damage was done, but it hurt like hell.

I'm still amazed at how fast I went from vertical to horizontal...
