I done did a thing.

Post by nightflameauto »

I've been pretty sparse around here lately due to an activity I took up around August and am still heavily involved in and likely will be for the foreseeable future.

The first real moment of truth has arrived. The wife was practically as giddy as me when we opened up the box and pulled out:
draftbook.jpg

My first official, in-print, book. "The Messiah of Death." I'm still considering this version "draft" material, as there are ongoing edits happening, but I had enough interest among my buds that know what it's about to print a few copies to toss at those that want to be part of the review / edit process.

Response from the various PDFs I've handed out has been pretty positive thus far. One of my bros was telling me this morning he wants to see it picked up by HBO or Netflix. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

My draft process is deep in book six and my editing process is currently hovering between books one and two, so this isn't gonna be a one-off. This is by far my longest term personal project to date. Apparently I just needed to be an old fuck to learn how to concentrate on anything for more than a few weeks.

Thanks, bro.

It's essentially sci-fi / horror / fantasy with a healthy dose of comedy tossed in to lighten up the mood in between brutal battles and purely disgusting gore-filled messes.

Vampires in space. Space navy. Elite fighting forces with swords and knives sweeping through massive feral vampire hordes during The Vampire Wars, saving people, space stations and even entire planets. And a dude that could have grown up down the street from me having the opportunity to seek revenge on the vampire that turned him in the 1990s and has been ruling his life with an iron fist ever since. The main story set in 2575.

That's book one. It only gets weirder from there.

That sounds verrrrrrrry ambitious. Good on you for putting the time in! It's probably very rewarding on a creative level \m/

The cool thing is that the BIG events are just background for the character interaction that really drives the story. So the massive entities in practice (The Vampire Wars, The Settler Battles, The establishment of the Feral Vampire Elimination Team Program, etc.) become little ticks in time in the lives of the important characters.

The feedback I've gotten from people reading the drafts so far has been fairly positive, which is the best feeling in the world when you sink that kind of time into something.

I'm not counting on that happening. But hey, if somebody decides to give me the George RR Martin treatment and fuck over my story for literal trucks full of cash? Bring it on.

I'll probably post when I get my revisions done with a way to buy either digital or hard copy. Right now it's just a very few being handed out to dudes I work with and know in meat space.

Making arrangements on that front, as well as getting barcoded and a ISBN number before it's completely ready to go.

LOL.

Book two is about 3/4ths through the second re-write. Book one is getting the spit-polish before a "real" print-run. Books three through six are in draft form. My wife's cracking the fuck up reading the drafts, so something seems to be ticking correctly.

Final edit is *STAMPED* done.

Copyright has been filed and will be official as soon as the Library of Congress gets its copy.

This is the furthest I've ever gotten on a long-term project. Shit's gettin' realz.

The hardcover has a proof on its way to me and the softcover is a few days behind the hardcover. eBook is going up either late this week or early next. At this point I find myself hovering between near hysterical giddiness, and "dammit! Just be done already!"

Anyone that likes self-aware campy space opera / horror, with a few heartfelt moments woven in between the craziness, and would like a physical copy, signed or unsigned, hit me up, bros.

WARNING: This is not a children's story. If it were a movie it would come with a parental advisory. Swearing, violence, blood, sex, I pretty much cover all the fun stuff. :cop:
