Chess

Post by Thurston »

The Queen's Gambit series got me playing chess on my phone last year. My son saw me playing, became obsessed and we started me down a rabbit hole of chess videos on youtube, kids apps and now I have a newfound love for the game, both with him and on my own.

Anyone else get down? I play on lichess.com regularly :nerd:

I really enjoyed watching the Queens Gambit as well! Used to play in coffee shops a bunch in college, but rarely play these days. That's rad you are playing with your boy, Thurston.

I played a long time ago, but no one I am regularly around cares for the game, so there are few opportunities. Not sure I would care for playing online...

I’m eagerly awaiting the day my kid is old enough to think he can step to me in any Street Fighter game. I don’t care if it’s II, 4, Alpha 3, 3rd Strike, V… he’s going down.

Really cool that you and your son found something to do together! :rawk: :rawk: :rawk:

Haven't played chess in a long time but, I play Go on my cell phone occasionally.
Back in the late 80's, computer chess sets came down in price so, my brother and I both had one of our own. We played the two sets against each other and when they were down to about 4 pieces each, his set tried to move a piece that was no longer on the board... we took the move back, continued the game and it tried to make the same move so, we decided that my board won.

I had this one from Radio Shack. You had to press down on the square that you wanted to move and then, press down on the square where you moved the piece.
The computer told you which moves it was making with lights on the vertical and horizontal.

I'm pretty good but I'd rather play GTAV , the Queen's Gambit was really great show .

Is fun and one of those things that gets better the more you play and learn. With youtube now there are some entertaining guys showing cool stuff too.

Cool! When my grandfather died I asked for his electronic chess set from the 70s. I always thought it was really interesting but I was too young for him to let me try it. I pulled it out to show my son (he's 5 btw) a few days ago and the computer loses track of things so it doesn't work anymore.

Check out the new ones that are completely automated:

actually I did not see the Queens Gambit but lately I taught my daughters chess as I remembered the words of a friend of my family who taught me the game after he stated something like "you cannot be 12 years old without knowing how to play chess"

In the course of that teaching exercise i discovered as well a lot of entertaining chess content on youtube, CoffeChess, Botez, Hikaru, etc. there as a lot of good stuff happening.

I love chess!!

I learned when I was in 5th grade and played sparingly throughout my teens and early adult. Then one day a buddy/co-worker asked if I knew how to play and if he brought a board would I be interested in playing during lunch.......fast forward and we did that nearly everyday for 5 years straight  up until he left the company. We still keep in touch and became great friends over chess but just talking about life.

Check out a YouTube channel called Coffee Chess. It's a group of players/friends in California that get some good games going and the guy that "hosts" will analyze each game with tactics and missed opportunities. They have a few GMs on the channel and actual got Hikaru Nakamura to come play a few games.

100%. It doesn't matter which one, though it helps to have played the Alpha/EX era for the extras, but at the core the game is unchanged. If you kicked ass at II, you can still beat the better players on any of the following versions.

I'm unbeatable for them. Two of them celebrate wining a single round on me each, barely. Sure they can kick my ass at so many games but I put on V and they're toast.

Speaking of games that have essentially remained the same, the oldest has dominated the rest in Mario Kart from Wii through Switch. A few months ago he was like "hee hee hey dad you wanna play?". I had that fucker sweating so bad. We were going back and forth during the race and of the three tracks we ran I won one of them. I was second on the other two. Nobody in the house had ever beat him. It was the first time I had played in years. His jaw dropped.
