When Clapton was God.

This is some of the best tone ever:

Listen to how the single note effortlessly feedbacks at :09 seconds. Awesome. From what I've read this was probably a Marshall Super 45/100 with KT66's. The guitar was his Fool SG with patent number pickups. Its amazing how he almost gets a fuzz tone with just the amp and guitar.

Its also crazy how much differently he played back then. Damn near like a different person. I know my LP makes me play differently than when I'm on my Fenders... Thinking the same is true for Clapton. Even today he sounds so much more soulful on his ES-335 than he does on his Fenders.

This next video shows him discussing his "woman tone" and how to achieve it. Sounds so fucking good IMO:

This is from a show in 1966 at Klook Kleeks in London. He played this one with a Burst (I believe a 1960)

This whole show is on youtube and is worth listening to.

Old school Clapton is awesome. I always tell people to watch this type of video when they say that "Clapton is no big deal".

The other thing is that Clapton's playing became SO synonymous of blues/rock guitar playing that a lot of people now think he's playing is generic... well is generic now that everybody imitated it!!!

I've always been a fan of the guy.

Yeah, so this makes me want that White SG Standard a whole bunch more.

That shit is filthy.

Exactly! I don't think people realize that before Cream mainstream rock 'n roll was the Chuck Berry or Rockabilly variety. Cream came out and blew the doors off! You might could even call them the first jam band.

I never GAS for an SG and listening to this stuff, specifically the one where he shows of the woman tone, makes me gas for one!

I have never cared for Clapton in the modern sense; but the Cream stuff I have checked out is golden. Tones are amazing in that vid.
I went and listened to some tracks on your band's RN page a while back and you are definitely channeling that vibe. Albeit in a more burning, up to date sort of way :rawk:

Thanks brother! I need to record some of the new stuff I've been writing so you guys can check it out. All LP of course. :D

So I just found this entire show: Killer playing all the way through!

That sounds gorgeous. Kinda makes me want to bust out my Bassmaster tomorrow. I always forget that I own a four hole Plexi. It's just that it's of the Canadian variety :D

It eats pedals for lunch.

Good stuff, Telephant.

I dick around with the "wha in treble position, neck pickup with tone knob rolled off" thing quite often. I dont have a JTM100, but it works quite nice with my hot rodded plexi, and my Metroamp 68 12xxx Superbass clone.

I haven't played my Superbass in months. I need to bust it out and try and cop some of these tones. When I was recording the other night I actually used the low in put on my Mojave to simulate this kinda tone and it sounded awesome, thought maybe slightly more aggressive.

Yeah. I liek it with about any pick up, and even almost with any dirt / fuzz, but to my ears, the wah makes a difference. My early / mid 70's Vox King Wah sounds the best when doing the Cream thing. (not the best vintage vox, but still killer wahs that can be had for under 200. Just need the pot / gear adjusted in them to find the sweet spot). My King wah sounds better to me than my old Roger Mayer, and a Teese wah that I used briefly (loaner)

Which Roger Mayer do you have? I have his 9090A kit in an old Vox shell that used to be my main wah. :)

Fast forward to 1 hour and 12 minutes in this video. It almost sounds like he's using a fuzz. The single note lines are so fat and wooly yet still so clear.

I had the Red Lion kit in a Vox Shell. (actually had 2 of em) One of them had a cap & 2 resistors changed out for a but more sweep & a cunt hair less "bite" on the treble side. I prefered the stock Red Lion Circuit, with the trim pot adjusted to my liking.

What I liked about the Red Lion, is that it worked good with Fuzz's & Distortion pedals. I think he built some sort of buffer into the circuit (?)

Some of my favorite stuff of all time.

This is one of the top 5 reasons why I can't get owning an R8/R9/G0 out of my system. Even though it's never going to be the same.

The other 4 reasons are
Billy Gibbons
Paul Kossoff
Peter Green
Gary Moore

You took the words right outta my mouth! I have been listening to a ton of Free lately as well. I was going to start a thread on them next. :D

My pops was into them in the early 70s so that sound was stuck into my head at a very young age. I just wish the feel stuck with me when I really got serious about playing.

I think my next wah, I'm gonna shoot for a Jerry Cantrell. Seems like it'd be a good "cover all your bases" kinda wah that wont break the bank.

Ive taken shitty stock dunlop wahs & got good sounds just by re-adjusting the pot / gear & removing the front feet off of em, but that only goes so far. Im curious about the area 51's. Ive heard some really nice clips of them.

I love my Cantrell. Covers a lot of ground and sounds killer clean or dirty. But I am jonesing for something different. The univibe thread has me thinking about getting one again. But it would have to be in wah pedal form.

I just like it better that way.

You know when I was younger I never listened to Free because "All Right Now" was so fucking overplayed... However, its a shame because that song is not really indicative of the rest of their material. Songs like Fire and Water, The Stealer, Mr Big are so fuckin' bluesy and groovin'. Their cover of The Hunter is a personal favorite of mine. :)
