Quit work to be an alcoholic

So I mentioned in the "MLK who's working?" thread that one of my staff just didn't show up. Turns out another staff member got a hold of him yesterday. The conversation went something like this....

"Hey man! you alright?"

"No. I'm an alcoholic and just started drinking again, I can't stop, ... and I quit."

... my first reaction to learning this was  but it's a shame really and I hope he figures it out soon and finds a new job.

nothing funny about that, guessing that person's life is not too sweet right now and only going to get worse before better. i am sure he doesnt want to be a bum, sucks that he cant control his demons.

Some folks draw a Govt. check for being alcoholics. Why not.

It's like, "dude... bring your hung over ass into work, grin and bear through the day, and get drunk after 5pm like the rest of us"

Yeah, not cool. I'm a functional alcoholic and I'm not real proud of it

To quote a friend who is a reformed coke/crackhead,alcoholic...

"If you can't do eight straight, you really have a problem."

He said this to me years ago while still hitting it hard.

I am a functioning alcoholic as well. I pretty much drink every day but I do not blow off my kids or work because of it. I don't get shitfaced every day though. I save that for the weekends because nothing sucks worse than trying to function at work while hungover.

I drink everyday. I never get drunk or shitfaced. I drink out of boredom and the fact that I hate my job. I need a new gig and a pretty diversion of the vaginal kind.

at least you guys can admit you have a problem and aren't in denial about it. thats a big step. best of luck to you all, i hope nothing but the best for you. addressing your problems and fixing them is always better than ignoring them.

Good for you Pepi!!!! No shame in seeking help at all.

I've been thinking long and hard about stopping. I need positive change in my life.

I'm definitely a functioning alcoholic. Drink daily, probably skip about 3-5 days out of the year if that many. It's kind of ingrained in us in southern Louisiana to drink all the time.

My bro can't be that far away from this. Odd timing since he hasn't been to work since last Thursday...

We're not on speaking terms due to his alcoholism. He's a raging drunk with the shakes :(

I gave up drinking for a couple weeks just to make sure I still can. Had a couple new castles on Sunday and they just weren't the same. I think his drinking has killed drinking for me. It's not fun or cool, but I've been getting a lot better on my guitar while sober every day.

I've seen this happen a few times with people I've worked with over the years. One of them it was for crack though. Sad stuff.

I've for the most part quit drinking. I've been able to go out socially to bars recently and not drink, so I know I'm getting close to really being over it. For the past couple years, little by little, I've lost my enthusiasm to drink. Every time I drink I regret it. Even if it's only 1 drink, my mood gets thrown off, I get lame sleep, and I'm just pretty much over it.

It sucks about this guy though. I hired him about a month ago and he seemed like a genuinely good guy. He was a decent worker too, nothing spectacular, but he was showing up everyday and working extra hours when we needed him to. This whole thing was a surprise... and he's only in his mid 30's. sucks...

After last evening's meeting I will have to admit ... I may not be a real alcoholic. Talk about some very sad talk in that meeting :-s I think I'm going to continue each Tue evening. I met up with some real nice people and we had a great time.
