Arkansas GOP Official Who Wants Guns In Schools Accidentally Shoots Teacher

There’s going to come a point in this country when satire is no longer effective. That point my be rapidly approaching, because you really can’t make this stuff up if you try. State Senator Jeremy Hutchinson (R) in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre did what any sensible, sensitive law maker would do and wrote legislation allowing and encouraging guns in schools. Hutchinson’s brilliant idea is that in a chaotic and nightmarish situation having more people with guns and without badges is the best way to end that nightmare quickly.

While attending an “active shooter” safety drill to learn more about putting guns in schools, Hutchinson put himself and firearms in the headlines, but probably not the way he wanted to. During the safety drill, Hutchinson discharged his gun and shot one of the instructors. Fortunately for Hutchinson, he was using rubber bullets. If you’re thinking that nearly accidentally killing someone for a political point would give Hutchinson a change of perspective; if you thought that he’d be able to see if things could go awry when everyone was trying to be as safe possible…you’d have to think again.

Hutchinson is still apparently all fired up about getting guns into the hands of teachers and other faculty at schools. It boggles the mind that even after confronting the dangerous reality of accidental shootings an elected official would think that putting live rounds in guns and giving them to people who will be in close, intimate range with children isn’t such a hot idea. Accidental shootings don’t happen all day every day, but the fact remains they happen enough so that anyone with just a modicum of logical ability would prefer there to be fewer guns around children, and not more.

Should teachers be allowed to carry weapons into their classrooms? Or is there something to be said for the innocence of a “gun free zone,” and at least some things in life should be kept from being turned into potential battle fields? How much of our pervasive gun culture are we going to let seep into our children’s lives? Arkansas State Senator Jeremy Hutchinson feels we should put guns anywhere and everywhere we want to. So there you have it. The word of the guy who shot someone in firearm safety class, or the common sense one gains from just waking up and thinking for five seconds about deadly weapons and their relative proximity to children.

The average deaths in a shooting rampage when stopped by police is 14.3.

The average deaths in a shooting rampage when stopped by civilians is 2.3

Well, the conclusion of this thread was pretty quick.

Even more amazing when you figure one of those deaths usually includes the perp.

and hes right.

i dont know of riot or simmunition being used for any other reason than when impact on another person is expected and desired. this smells of something to me.

in a shooting situation, teachers are trainined to get their kids in the class, huddled against a wall, with the lights off. if they were armed, and trained, the tactical advantage is by far theirs. they have a far better chance of being in a good firing position than the police ever would.

also what abstract said.

thanks for playing though.

Also, title of thread is misleading.

Trying to pick and choose "teacher" when in the article it states Instructor.

We all know "shoots teacher" is more shocking than "shoots gun instructor."

FWIW the title of the thread is an abbreviated version of the article title which is:

"Arkansas GOP Official Who Wants Guns In Schools Accidentally Shoots Teacher". In other words, I didn't make up the thread title to mislead people.

I agree that "shoots teacher" is more shocking than "shoots gun instructor".

Would you agree or disagree that instructor = teacher? Or is this just an example of the media manipulating the facts to make headlines and bolster their personal agenda?

:idk:

Teacher is a term we link to elementary school and high schools.

Professor or Dr. - college/university

Instructor or coach would be more in line with what happened here in this particular context IMO.

This article was written to make us automatically assume some 3rd grade teacher got shot while teaching finger painting.

If the GOP official had live rounds the shooting instructor would be dead.

I'm just sad no one thought he was on a rampage and shot him.

THAT would be a story.
