The old guy crew at my work has invited me to Scotch Night this Friday.

I enjoy drinking Scotch, but I'm not much of a connoisseur. I like a few blends, McCallan, GlenLivet 18, etc. but I'm thinking I'll need to step up my game to hang with these guys.

What do you all enjoy drinking, and why? Going to make a BevMo run, so give me some good ideas for what I should pick up.

I usually like single malts. One of my personal favorites is Lagavulin 16. Oban 14 is also great. So is Talisker 10.

I finished a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 a couple weeks ago. Got it in May as a birthday gift and sipped it all summer long. It was pretty spicy and had that kind of woody taste that Glenfiddich seems to have. The 18 has a harsher, more "burnt" character compared to the Glenfiddich 15 I have had before.

Right now I have a bottle of Laphroaig 10 and Macallan 12. The Laphroaig is pretty solid given the price point: It has that smokey wood/earthy character present that I have come to enjoy. The Macallan is the first scotch I have tried where I can actually relate the terms "peppery" and "sherry" to the spirit. I have heard those used frequently, but never really could taste it, myself.

Think I'm going to try some Highland Park 12 next time.

Go get that Laphroaig 10 that Rampage is talking about.

Another vote for Laphroaig. I have a bottle here I need to finish.

+3 for teh Laphroig - Quarter Cask is our favorite.

I prefer Macallan to Laphroaig, but either will get the job done. Balvenie Doublewood is good, too. If you have a trader joe's in your area they have good prices on all of the above.
