shit most places dont even knock you out anymore. local anesthetic only. but its not bad.

When I got mine out they didn't even give me enough to fully knock me out.

It wasn't so bad though.

That night I ate cake, a burger, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and fries.

Like a boss.

Very minor procedure, you'll be fine. My two lower wisdom teeth cracked and had to be dug out and I felt fine early on; I didn't even use the pain killers I was prescribed.

The two things that helped me the most were drinking a lot of ice water with a straw so that I could direct the cold water right onto the incisions and putting a bag of frozen corn on my jaw. Did that the first day and felt fine.

The worst part for me was yawning. Stitches don't like yawning.

I had all four taken out at once. They put me under, and I was so dazed I went home and fell alseep. Woke up in a pool of my own blood and in extreme pain (cause the meds had worn off). Popped some vicodin and it was cool. Only took a couple days to go back to normal. Its not bad at all, just stay on top of your pain meds and you'll be fine.

Yeah I'm getting all 4 of mine out too, and getting fully knocked out. I guess thats the part that scares me the most is having my mouth chopped up when I'm totally unconscious. Not that it would be any better if I was awake, but still. Plus I'm not looking forward to being all swollen and bruised and having to eat pudding and mashed potatoes for several days.

be glad. it doesnt HURT to have teeth cracked and ripperd out while under local, but it feels fucking horrific.

I got knocked right out too because two of mine were impacted. I guess you need to put some faith in the anaesthesiologist, but I'd rather be knocked out than watch the dentist pry my jaw open and chisel out my teeth with a freaking hammer, pliers, and whatever other construction tools are kicking around...

I woke up flying HIGH lol... I remember rolling over and saying " 'SUP! " to the guy next to me before realizing my mouth was full of gauze. My face was sore for a week or two, but overall it wasn't bad. Slowly move back to solid food, and take care to keep those gaps clean and it will be fine.

if you start to feel naucious while the anesthetic is being administered, ask them to put a cold rag on the back of your neck. works.


also i learned two things during mine:

-red haired people are notoriously resistant to anesthetics (wtf? yup)

- i am immune, yes immune, to vicodin proper. apparently there is a synthetic and a natural version of those type of painkillers, and whichever one vicodin is, i have to use the other as vic has zero effect.

That is weird. Norco is the shit brah. Pop a Norco, wait till it starts to kick in, then take a massive bong hit. Stuff that dreams are made of.

Another thing is I hope I don't do anything dumb while I'm still wacked out on whatever they pump me full of.

I had all mine taken out under "knockout" sedation, in the chair at an oral surgeon's office.

All I remember is partly waking one time when he was pulling on a tooth. It didn't hurt, but he was rocking my head around a lot. I sort of gurgled at him, and he backed off a minute and I konked right out again. I woke up after it was all done, with the gauze packing stuffed in my cheeks.

At home I had planned to watch TV and eat jello and drink icy drinks. I couldn't even focus my eyes I was so drugged up. When you're too buzzed to watch TV, you are pretty damned high.

Only one word of warning - DO NOT SNEEZE. I am 100% serious, do anything you can to not sneeze. Snort, snuffle, pinch your nose, poke yourself with a sharp stick, whatever. A sneeze with fresh oral stitches hurts like a sonofagun, my eyesight flashed white for about 15 seconds and I got buzzing in my ears. You do NOT want to sneeze.

The doc gave me Demerol for pain - tiny little white pills that packed a wallop (synthetic cousin of morphine, basically). It's not that popular these days, but at any rate, you don't want more than 2 days (3 max) of strong narcotics.

Bizarre advice - on day 2 of the pain meds take several full doses (as recommended on the box) of laxative stool softener like Dulcolax. You will be VERY glad you did.

Did you know you can sprain your ass ? I didn't know that at the time.

Fuckin' American docs and their opiates, giving 'em out like candy. I think I *might* have gotten about 10 T3's when I had mine done... more likely just extra strength ibuprofen. That was 10 years ago, don't really remember that part.

More or less true these days. Mine were done over 15 years ago *, mostly before the current pharmo-blitz in the USA. Truth be told, I really needed the painkiller. I generally don't take a thing, but the pain and pressure I had from that was excruciating (I had pre-existing complications). On the 3rd day my symptoms were done and I came down with a plop. He only prescribed what was needed.

* Demerol / Meperidine isn't in widespread use these days

Don't you Canadians have CCA pills? Someone I know brought some back from Canada, they were Caffeine, Codeine and Asprin all in one pill. It was like the super hangover pill.

Everyone acts out of the ordinary when they come out of it. You won't do anything too bad. Use that time as an opportunity to make sexual advances on any females in the office. Worst case scenario, they blame the drugs.

It's different for everyone. I had four out on a Thursday, had taken that day and the Friday off work, plus the weekend, figured I'd be right by Monday. Felt pretty whacky and numb afterwards, tried eating and drinking some shit when I got home and realised it was pretty much pointless. So I just went to bed. Woke up however many hours later feeling pretty good. When I woke up the next day and felt 100% fine, no swelling, no pain, could have gone in to work (but fuck 'em, I hardly ever take time off for anything). They gave me some decent painkillers, but I never even needed them. Only took 'em once coz I couldn't be bothered waiting to fall asleep.

My best mate, who's a big angry beefed cunt... had his out, whined like a bitch about it, face pretty much doubled in size. His little sister who's a tiny little thing had hers out a while later, and coz of what happened to her brother was all worried about it beforehand. She was pretty much like me. Day after, no fuckin' problems.

If we have 'em, I've never been prescribed them. They probably just sell 'em to Americans.

AFAIK, there are a few different factors affecting how painful it will eventually be when the meds wear off - if they were impacted into your other teeth/jaw, how calcified the roots are, how the dentist extracts them (I think standard practice is to break the tooth into shards and then pull those out instead of yanking the whole thing), how neatly they stitch you up afterwards, how high your pain tolerance is, how clean you keep things while it's healing (heard some horror stories about "dry socket" and getting sepsis from the sockets getting infected)... the list goes on.
