Painted a couple of my firearms... Opinions?

Post by madryan »

I usually never leave anything black, simply because it shows up worst than anything else in the woods, and I don't mind the extra protection on my guns. So I just painted these two...

What sort of paint did you use, and how did you apply the pattern over top ? It sort of looks stencilled.

How tough (hard) is the finish on the paint ?

I'd sort of like to do this to my shotgun, my 22 rifle and my SKS (which is in a Montecarlo stock 'cause the original stock was terrible).

I use Alveroe paint, sand, MC Green, Earth, Dark Green, and OD over the top to blend it all. Sand is the base coat, then I use the camo net as sort of a stencil. Just hit it in various places so it puts blots on the gun with each color.

It's fairly durable if you clean your rifle well with brake cleaner, then let it cure for a day or two before oiling it up and using it.

fn-rad!

I want to do that to a cheap Savage 308 bolt...but I don't have the balls.

Were your guns SS or blued or parkerized/tenefer?

I'm guessing the AR was that standard black anodized coating.

The Shotty was that pseudo park thing Remington does these days. It's not super corrosion resistant and since this is my beater gun I'm always tossing it in the car or a truck or whatever and it'll rust if I'm not careful.

The Paint thing is easy. Just put a fairly thin basecoat on with the sand, then go for whatever pattern you want, then lightly overspray with the OD to blend it all.
