USB charging issue with iPhones, iPads, other Apple devices

When using a high current USB charger, like the ones Apple recently introduced, there can be significant arcing when inserting a charging cable into the iPhone or iDevice if the cable is already connected to the charger. This arcing will deteriorate the surface of the 4th pin on the lightning connector:
What's worse is that this also happens to the contacts in the power receptacle on the phone.
It's one thing to buy a replacement cable, but what's it take to replace a ruined Lightning connector on the device?

Be sure to connect the cable at the device end first, then connect it to the power source.

to keep wear down on charging ports from constantly plugging and unplugging into them, i bought 6 magnetic charging cables. each comes with a USB-C, micro USB, and a Lightning adapter. you plug the adapters into your devices, and the cable can charge any of them. one for each car, and the rest scattered around the house.

they are all over Amazon - just seach "magnetic usb cable"
here is one, for example KUULAA 3Pack Magnetic Charging Cable USB C,3A Fast Charging/Data Transmission with 3 in 1 Charging Tips Nylon-Braided Phone Cable Compatible for iProduct/Type C/Micro Device(3.3ft/3.3ft/3.3ft) https://a.co/d/c2E4Gg9

there are different lengths and connector styles (rounded, right angle, etc.) i went with the "flat" style like in the link above. they work great in a car, because you just get the cable near your phone, and the magnet sucks it in lol

buy as many as you need, plus an extra or two ... they dont all have the same pinout on the connectors, so if you ever need more in the future, you'd need to order the exact same ones ...

Interesting. My last 2 iPhones have crapped out at the power connection, and I just replaced the whole phone each time. The people at AT&T said its because lint from my pocket was clogging the port, but I kinda knew that was bullshit once the second phone died as I was vigilant about keeping the power side up in my pockets and cleaning out the port weekly...

i originally got them for Android Auto in the car - i use wireless chargers in the house, but needed to plug in for AA in the car. with the mag cable, the charging adapter was always in the port (so no damaging it) and was super easy to connect without even looking

The front ports of my last PC crapped out from all the plugging in and out.
I now have an $8.00 USB Hub that takes all the abuse.... need one for my Mac.
