Serious question as I'm nearly 40 at this point so I'm wondering what younger kids are doing.
Are they just in their room making EMD and/or beats solo (Rubato?)?
Or are they still getting together and making music live just in new ways?

Honestly one of the best parts of creating and playing music is the whole feel that is playing with others live.
I'm just curious if those of you with kids or are in touch via other means know whats going on.
I don't expect live band music to die per se but is it going to become done less and less by younger generations?

I'm pretty sure yes is the answer . There are "school of rock" all over the place . there is one right by me and I hear them all the time . None of them can sing however lol

Yes but it's a lot less prevalent than it used to be. My high school in the late 80's/early 90's had at least 10 different bands and they were mostly decent. We were playing difficult stuff too, Ozzy, VH etc and doing it relatively well. And we used to organize backyard parties/shows or early evening all age gigs and even get bar gigs with fake IDs lol

My son's high school had 1-2 bands (he was in one of them) and honestly they were struggling with Foo Fighters type stuff. One of his friends was a really good drummer though.

So yeah there are young bands out there still, but it's slower than it used to be, by a lot.

The area I'm at has a strong original music scene, which is great but it's pretty much 25+ y.o. with the bulk being over 30 or even over 40 like me.

Maybe some of those kids will invent some cool new genre for old heads to enjoy.

And I say this as a man who’s been to countless EDM shows not as just the near 40 year old who still plays in punk bands.

yeah I think the 10's were the big drop. EDM is not that popular either tbh. I only know one kid that's sort of doing it (my wife's nephew). It seems like the most popular music format for kids now is the singer/songwriter with acoustic guitar or piano. And I see more girls than boys.

But overall, I think social media has replaced music as the teenagers' primary form of expression and identity. The teens that were trying to be music stars back in the day are the teens trying to be social media influencers now..

Music - including rock - is far from dead and it will never completely die out, but it's no longer THE thing to do for teens...

I'm sure that kids are still making music and forming bands. Certainly my friends who run rehearsal spaces and recording studios still seems to be busy enough and I suspect that most of their clients are under 30. That said, there is a lot more stuff to take the younger generations attention - you can make good money streaming games so a lot of kids will be trying to crack that market. From the data leak it was reported somewhere that one of the top streamers earns something like $100k a month for playing PUBG, which is fucking insane.

Two really valid points I hadn't even considered. Hell we even see that as old heads that still play gigs. People just have so many options for entertainment that going to a show is a hard sell a lot of the time if its not a band you're already in love with.

My wife's daughter is starting guitar, and has a year of violin under her belt
My oldest son is in drum lessons and the youngest is in piano.

We'll see where this takes them. The older two are really in to music right now, and the youngest loves the musical youtubers like Davie504. He has learned a ton of the meme songs on the piano which seems strange at first, but it's keeping him interested in playing so whatevs.

It’s also a pretty sexless generation, so the desire to impress and compete in feats of skill and coolness outside of things like social media and games seems quite lacking.
