Power metal, when done right; is pretty much perfection.

Jee-sus. Maybe it's the old man in me. Not sure. Listening to the new Helloween and back to their old stuff. As well as a bunch of related (and not related) bands. But the feels that a super melodic vocal on top of traditional metal riffage done just right hits is just

I often wish I was a singer and this genre is pretty much the reason why that wish exists :rawk:

I agree. Man, I still can't get enough of some Blind Guardian. I'm starting to pick up some of their vinyl. Nightfall in Middle Earth is so outstanding.

I haven't ever dug into them. I need to take a listen.

I've been stuck on Dream Evil and older stuff like Savatage as of late as well. There's stuff from the 90s like Hammerfall I could never get into as well stuff like Primal Fear that I should dig but don't. I'm kind of picky about it without any real defining reasons for my pickiness

On the other hand, power metal, when done wrong, is like shoving icepicks in your ears while trying to pull a logging truck with your dick. Some seriously painful efforts have been put up as "power metal."

But, when it's right, it's right.

I've got a couple Hammerfall albums that . . . I dunno. They sorta straddle the border between yes and no for me, depending on my mood, how much high pitched bullshit I'm willing to put up with vocally, and how much ball atrophy I'm willing to experience before needing to move onto something with some actual testosterone in it.

I can't get into a lot of Power Metal and other music in general. I get pretty picky and I only come back to certian stuff because I got into it when I had different musical tastes. I've been on a tech-death course for a stretch, but I still can't get enough of Wintersun, Blind Guardian and Iron Maiden.

Oh, and I get that Iron Maiden is NWOBHM, but it still feels like Power Metal in a lot of respects. It's still one of my favorite bands of all time.

No Maiden, no power metal. They are one of the greats obviously. I am not super pedantic about genres either. I don't disagree with you either, NFA  Bad power metal is BAD  but the good stuff hits such a spot :rawk:

Iron Maiden is to power metal what Slayer is to modern hardcore. Take away the first and the second disappears in a wisp of leather pants and stage smoke.

Yep. That first Hatebreed album was like "um...uh...yeah?"

I didn't pay a ton of attention to Hatebreed until the point where they were literally throwing Slayer covers into their sets and then saying in interviews, "We're all just trying to be Slayer anyway." Then it clicked. :cop:

I still can't listen to more than 15 seconds of Hatebreed. They're like 5 Finger Death Punch to me.

Just with better influences :cop:  I (think?) like a song or two off Perseverance? Vocally speaking; Jasta is obviously on the opposite end of the spectrum for me compared to singers I am referencing in this thread. And his self-help lyric slant is a little too Tony Robbins for my taste. But he has always seemed cool compared to the other Rikki Rachtman/Headbanger's Ball dumb%$^&$ we had to sit through in our younger years.

A-fuckin'-men to that. I've seen Hatebreed live and enjoyed it fine, but I still don't go out of my way to listen to them outside of that.

God, Rikki Rachman. There's some hate-flash memories. Years later, when they did that retrospective thing, it turns out he ain't so bad. He just got force-fed a lot of bullshit and told to hype it. Of course, calling every band on the show his favorite band became so much of a joke even he made fun of himself for it.

"Dat tampura band is like mah flavor-rite band evar."

I assume Kiko is on that Angra track? Dude is such a beast. Singer has a bit of a hollowed out Dio vibe. I like the music quite a bit. That Bard's Song was cool. I will have to give their studio stuff a go.

Yeah, Kiko was in Angra back then. He truly is a beast. That whole album is one of my favorites.

If you're checking out Blind Guardian, Imaginations From the Other Side is probably the one to check out.

I grew up on power metal and still love it. There are even some new bands that get it right.
