Home Brewing Beer...It’s A Thing To Do

Good evening,

In a thread about our ousted comrades, at least two of us admitted to brewing beer in our homes. I’m not going to use this thread as a means to exchange said libations, because that might be illegal, but I think it is worth discussing.

I’ve been brewing off and on for almost ten years. I also make mead. I only prefer making mead, because it is impossible to fuck up, but I am really appreciating the power of simplicity, and the value of pure, clean flavor.

I currently have a pale ale in the works, and a couple of varieties of mead - regular still mead, made with buckwheat honey from Saint Paul, and a cracked pepper sparkling mead, made with a different MN honey.

The biggest issue for me is with temperature control, and the ability to keep a constant low temperature. As a result, I’ve never made a lager, and I will be doing just that next brew day. I have that tentatively scheduled for April, but I might try to find a shop in Sioux Falls, where I will be working next week, and that will push the date up to that Saturday.

I've never made beer or lager because of the difficulty and gear required. I've made plenty turbo cider though

A hobby I traded in for fitness about 11 years ago because I got fat and unhealthy.

Turns out if you brew at a rate of 7 gallons a week your beer consumption has to match to keep up.

A hobby I’d love to return to at some point in the future. Will keep tabs on this thread to live vicariously through y’all.

As the resident Sioux Falls dude, I feel like my radar got pinged here.

My home brew journey is rather young. I'm attempting a natural fermentation technique and making a cocoa wine similar to what the Aztecs and Mayans would have enjoyed. My first small batch is coming along nicely, and I'm gathering supplies for a second, much larger batch. It's gonna be interesting seeing the end result.

Yeah man! Brewing is cool!!! :rawk: :rawk: :rawk: :rawk:

I used to brew all the time, back in my bachelor pad. Wheat beer always came out tasting the best but, after a few years, my supplier said the manufacturer stopped making wheat syrup for homebrewers. This was about 20 years ago so, hopefully they started making wheat syrup again.

For my last batch, I brewed up some wort, without any hops and made a stove top still and a condenser from Home Depot parts.
The moonshine came out clear, was about 65 proof and tasted like vodka. I got about 750ml from the 5 gallons of wort.

i had a brewing kit once, and determined it was far easier and cheaper to just buy a case.

I think its an awesome hobby, whether you want to make a really crispy pilsner or some crazy peanut butter and chocolate stout. It's just so cool that you CAN. Will be checking in on you guys.

Depends on your municipal water supply. Madison treats their water extensively, so I always go with filtered or bottled.

I won't even drink our city water. Wonder about showering in it

I did that a couple times, wasn't intentional either time, do not recommend it.

nothing more satisfying than drinking a beer in the shower.

the ultimate "i ain't doing shit today" refreshment.

haven't done that since college. :(

I quit drinking beer a few months ago, but that had started to be a regular occurrence right before that!

My dad used to home brew in the early 90's when I was a teen. I'd go with him to the one store that sold stuff for home brewers and I remember going to some shithole bar to buy used bottles, he had me cleaning and disinfecting them. Then he stopped but held onto the equipment, in the early 2000's he gave all his equipment to my brother, he never used it. He was going to give it to me but I never went and picked it up.
I still would like to try my hand at it, but I just don't really want to make the investment to buy all the stuff, especially since I haven't really been drinking beer since recreational became legal in Arizona.

Must not be impossible because a buddy of mine picked up a store-bought bottle of mead one time and it was fucking nasty.

I have another friend who makes his own and it was a million times better than the store bought shit

I had always wanted to brew my own beer, girlfriend and now wife bought me a small kit to give it a shot and was super satisfying to say the least once I drank it lol. Bought another kit from the same place for an Oatmeal Stout, first one was an IPA. Hadn't made the stout yet but I can see it brewing getting addicting and out of hand lol
