Can't wait to not listen.

i think she is a tremendously average singer. To my ears she just yells her lines and has no vocal skills above what you would hear at the local karaoke bar.

Old man rant over.

I'll call it a win regardless of what songs she picks.
We're all old here, many (or maybe even most) of you are older than me and I'm fucking 36.
Younger kids need to discover heavy music and reinvent it if we're to have any hope of it continuing in the future, even if this turns on 1% of her current fandom to Metallica or some metal in general who otherwise might never look into its a good thing of heavy music.

Haha what?

No it’s not a win on even the smallest nano scale. She isn’t exposing anyone who needs to be exposed to heavy music. And Metallica is barely even heavy at this point. And for those she does “introduce” she’s going to introduce them to butchered version of metal songs. Failing to see the positive in that.

And metal as a genre actually has some of the best longevity around. You have nearly all the big thrash bands still going, for 35+ years. There is even a ton of Death metal bands who have been going for 30 + years like Cannibal, Suffocation, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Obituary, etc Etc. and also there is literally 1000s of new bands in metal and extreme music. There is no shortage of New bands or old bands. The longevity is actually kinda shocking but most of these old bands have proven they can go into their 50s and 60s and they are still going. Whatver kids Miley effin Cyrus will influence is really not needed : haha

I actually like Miss Miley. She has a rock voice. Way more so than country. I haven’t really liked any of her covers yet though. Wish you were here was ok but this may be her best album yet.

So your argument is that metal as a genre is perfectly healthy and any young kid that might learn about Metallica via Miley Cirus (and by extension possibly the other of the big 4 and more) isn't worth having?
Metallica is barely even heavy by metal standards (duh) but relative to fucking Miley they might as well be Cannibal Corpse.
Maybe your experience is different but I keep seeing metal bands at smaller and smaller venues over the years and the crowds certainly aren't getting any younger. For that matter neither are the bands, seriously who is the new guard for the genre of young acts that are getting a lot of traction?
I just want more good music in the future and crowds to share it with, if some 10 year old hears Miley cover Nothing Else Matters and gets interested in guitar based music and ends up writing some killer music eventually or even if that kid just ends up at a Mastadon show then its a win in my book.

Last few shows I went to had a TON of young people at them. Even the retro-cool Slayer tour with Phil doing Pantera tunes, Ministry and Primus, the floor was packed with teens and twenty somethings. When Dethklok was still touring at those shows me and my buds were the outliers in age. Most of the crowd was teens and college kids. Chimaira and Hatebreed a few years back, almost all kids. Machine Head was a pretty even balance, but that's probably the oldest crowd I've seen in decades.

I guess I'm not really seeing the death of metal anytime soon. Maybe metal crowds aren't always packing arenas, big four not withstanding, but did anybody but the big four EVER pack arenas? Forgive me, but I don't recall ever seeing a show of death and thrash bands in a huge venue even in the eighties unless it was headlined by one of the big four.

Not that I think Miley covering Metallica isn't an interesting twist. Let people cover what they want. It doesn't actually hurt the genre. I'm not sure it's a huge win either though. Just one of those things. Like Avril Lavigne covering System of a Down (and biffing it horribly). I'll listen with mild amusement and then move on with my life.

While we're on a what metal needs.

What metal bands need to do: try writing something with a hook. Hooks can be dark. Hooks can be  It's nice to be able to walk away from a song and ***GASP*** remember a part/riff/***DOUBLE GASP***chorus!

that is where the metal genre splits , classic metal had hooks , modern metal or nu metal does not .

Nu metal has a ton of hooks. Modern metal has it's fair share as well. But it also has a fair share of initially mesmerizing then eventually boring showoff technicality. I get it that you can melt faces. If I can't remember a d@mn riff from your song/ep/album; you probably need to put the work in on that end as well :idk:

The last metal shows I saw (precovid, obviously) were LoG, Gojira, Meshuggah, DTP, Slayer, Protest the Hero, and Mastadon with PTH and Mastadon being the only shows where I, in my mid 30s, wasn't amongst the younger side for the crowd. Same goes for the festivals I've been to that include or are focused on metal (Open Air and Riot Fest), basically just a sea of dads. Maybe its just the bands or specific shows I've been to. :idk: I'd love to see actual data instead of disagreeing on personal experiences.

I'm not saying we're approaching the death of metal but it feels like we've hit the same wall many genres hit where is slowly fades into obscurity (looking at you blues and jazz). More new young blood reinventing things would be good to extend the timeline a little longer is all I'm getting at. I'm not implying Miley doing this will have any massive benefit, just saying more exposure to more people that otherwise wouldn't be exposed is good. Theres just so much music to wade through if you're young and trying to figure out what you're into its useful to have as many pipelines into the genre as possible both as a source of future fans and musicians.

Ultimately if it sucks I'll do what I've done with every release of hers to date, not listen to it.

I don't know how much it will help, my guess is there will be 2 kind of reactions, the usual Miley fan will listen to it once, then pretty much ignore it and wait for her next pop record and the usual rock/metal fan will make fun of it then also ignore it. Maybe a few fans will crossover but the average basic white teen girl is not going to like Metallica just because Miley covered them.. just like, as a rock/metal fan I don't feel more inclined to check out Miley's music because she's doing this.
I don't see this changing things in any way, it's kind of like the rap/rock/ metal collaborations of the 80's and 90's, some of it was cool, some wasn't but at the end most rock fans still don't like rap and vice-versa.

Now Miley knows she's set for life and can do whatever the fuck she wants from now on. So that's kind of cool in a way. It must be good to have this kind of fuck you money.

1000% all of this.

My thoughts...

1. It's just fashion. It's the same reason teenage kids wear Nirvana TShirts again that don't even know Nirvana is a band. (My 19 year old was one of them lol)

2. Metallica isn't metal anymore. Even new Metallica is classic rock. It's heavy oldies. And that's cool.

3. I'm interested to hear it. I think Miley Cyrus is an easy target, because of the Dumb Megastar Who Does Dumb Things persona, but she's been reasonably successful as a child country star, teen pop star, etc... and her voice has always sounded more Janis Joplin than Katy Perry to me anyway.

This won't change anything. Old men like us will still whine about it, the kids will see her as a "versatile artist", and she'll sell more records.

If anything, it's a little embarrassing that us dads are even talking about it.

The bolded is the portion I'll actually disagree with slightly. Literally everyone I've been friends with that is +/- 3 years of my age did and still do listen to both quite heavily. I'm not saying Aerosmith/Run DMC or Anthrax/Public Enemy are the reason necessarily since we obviously can't rerun the experiment but every fucking kid I knew in high school had both Metallica and Dr Dre CDs in their collection. Sure people who were past their musical formative years didn't suddenly get into rap and hip hop but I think the Venn Diagram of rap/rock from people who were in their formative years during that time is greater than you think.

I feel similarly to Post Malone doing that COVID Nirvana set. I think its great for these musicians with a large amount of young fans to share this shit with kids who otherwise might not be exposed. Not just because of the exposure but because they already like, trust, and consider the source to be cool which is much different than dad aged dudes like us sharing them. Maybe I'm just writing too much from my own playbook of getting into Descendents and Bad Religion via Sublime or going Nirvana > Bowie > Stones all via covers. Sure I'll grant its a more direct correlation and route for bands like this than Miley > Metallica and I'm not saying we're going to get a tsunami of teenage Miley fans suddenly into metal its just that exposure on the level she gets to music that is sunsetting can't hurt for maybe getting some new, specifically young, blood into the market.

All that said I said "cool shirt" to a kid in the past wearing a Ramones shirt who told me he was a big fan of their clothes so its entirely likely I'm wrong as shit about everything.

I think your generation was after this though, you said you're 36 so that's born in 84? Aerosmith was '86 and Anthrax '91, so I think it was more on my generation than yours ( I was 12 and 17 respectively). I don't recall any of my metalhead friends getting into rap because of Aerosmith or Anthrax, tbh. And vice versa. I am sure some did but nothing significant. We liked those specific songs but that was pretty much it.

It's true that a lot of kids likes rock and rap later on but think that's more related to MTV pushing both styles so heavily (as well as white rappers like the Beastie Boys and most importantly Eminem opening inroads with white teens) than rap/rock collab songs.
