The Critical Drinker is pretty awesome if you're not familiar.

Re: The problem with movies today
I stumbled across the Critical Drinker during the last season of GoT. His reviews almost made it worth keeping up with the show. The way he talked about Jon had me in stitches.
"Jon, Danny's going to kill a bunch of people. Don't you think we should stop her?"
"Nah, it'll be fine!"
I've been watching a lot of his other vids since and he's always on-point. And his descriptions. One of my favorites was when he started a video with a description of a time he slept over at a mates house because he was too drunk to make it home. Woke up in the middle of the night, puked all over the couch, living room, his new pair of sneakers, embarassed himself and lost the trust of his friend and blah, blah, blah. The description had me almost in tears. Then he hits me with, "and that's exactly how I feel about the writers as I'm watching this now." Good lord. The dude's a riot.
I'd hang with him and talk shit about TV.

I know, Right? Critical Drinker has caused me to disown star wars. That's how good he is, and how bad The Last Jedi was. He's actually an author. You can buy his thriller novels on amazon/ebay. His name is Will Jordan.
BTW, his Terminator Dark Fate critique was freakin' hilarious.

I haven't watched any of the Disney produced Star Wars films, but still watch his reviews of them just because he's so fun to listen to.
His rip-down of Marvel movies gets me rolling every time, and I generally like them. Captain Marvel was so vitriolic I had to stop it a few times and stop laughing before I could pick it back up.
I'll have to look up his novels at some point. I have a few things on my reading list already, but there's always room for more.

The telecommunications act of 1996 was the beginning of the end of real art in the mainstream.

The Golden Age Of Cinema coincided with the Golden Age Of The Muscle Car Era.
There may be a few holdouts and stragglers, but roughly 1964 to 1975.

Re: The problem with movies today
"Why Ghostbusters 2016 failed" and "Why all the new Star Wars movies suck". Talk about self-answering questions
Movies today suck because the independent film spirit, in large part; migrated to the series television form factor. And then would still get to the suck zone as the cash rolled in which would in turn justify putting out 12 more seasons than necessary to tell the story effectively.

I shall give his channel a flick through later. I generally find star wars insufferable, so anyone who can give me well reasoned arguments to extract fanboy tears is a good man in my book

But you forgot one thing.
The Last Jedi was SO bad, there are no more fanboys.

Your mission is complete. You must self terminate.

His reviews are awesome, even when ripping on films I enjoyed.
I saw the new terminator film and his assessment was very much on point.
One problem with a lot of media is the emphasis on inclusion to the point of forgetting story or plot.

Come on, man. If you include a black woman, an hermaphrodite, an animal indentifying as a lamp post and six white men that can't stand up under the weight of their guilty conscience it HAS to be better than developing likable characters or a plot! HAS TO! Disney told me so!

why?
Because it allowed a media company to enter into other sectors and consolidate ownership between print, radio, tv, movie, and music. So when there's that much control by a single entity over how things are made, consumed, promoted, and then reviewed it's a formula for the corporate interests to dominate the expression of art. That was always the case but before artists had more weight to throw around and could dictate terms more often.
The internet and streaming cracked that a little bit, but less with music and most with news content.

The main problem is the studios are so me-too about anything that's a hit that they won't hire decent writers or directors with fresh ideas. They'll only hire hacks and wanna-bes that can barely rewrite already huge money makers that are orders of magnitude removed from decent writing already simply because we've been in this cycle so long we're regurgitating the same bullshit over and over in an ever decreasing quality. Think of it like a copy machine, only each new copy has to be made from the latest copy rather than the original source because ain't nobody looking back to the truly great films of yesteryear for inspiration.
Here or there somebody will steal a popular book for a film idea, but mostly it's just copies of whatever was out last year. Bleh.
Same thing is happening on TV now with everybody convinced they need to one-up Game of Thrones, and doing it by targeting the quality of the worthless as fuck last season rather than the first four seasons that made the show worth watching. I enjoy fantasy, but I either want to see it cheesy as nachos like the CW is doing it, or true quality. This self-unaware horseshit most are passing as their "really high budget fantasy" has shit-show writing and acting and completely misses the mark. Gah.
I need to get back to reading old books for entertainment again.

Re: The problem with movies today
There was a time that the writers and directors were visionary artists, and while they still may exist out there, the industry would rather gate-keep and prevent the outliers from gaining authority about the direction that a film takes. It's all top-down industry controlled safe plays and we've gotten so used to it as consumers that we just kinda expect everything to suck and we play along out of habit and boredom.

Hey! Thanks for this post. I forgot where I found this dude.
LOVE the content OMG. This guy matches my own opinions to a T.
Even got a response Re: The Orville
"Hi Redeyes
Glad you've been enjoying my work! Yeah, The Orville is 100 times better than any of the recent Star Trek crap they've been rolling out over the past few years. Definitely much more in the spirit of TNG and DS9. I'd certainly like to review it, but I need to watch more episodes as I've only seen a handful so far and there's a lot of catching up to do now.
One day though, it'll get done.
Cheers,

Lately the movies with low ratings seem to be what I like . I watched 'Awake' last night and it was rated 1 star. It wasn't that bad of a movie really
