Harold and Maude

I had seen this movie years ago, but I was flipping through the channels last night and it was on, so I watched it again.

Most people only know it as the favorite film of Cameron Diaz' character in There's Something About Mary, but very few people have actually seen it. It's considered a "dark comedy", but it actually has some really poignant commentary on people in general. The flower scene in the cemetery and the "glorious birds" comment that Maude makes while they are sitting by the bay are the two that really resonated with me.

It is also pretty damn funny, although some of the humor is admittedly cheesy. For my money, Harold's mom and the priest are the funniest characters. And the cliff scene at the end is one of the better endings to a movie that I have seen.

Any other fans of this flick?

I remember seeing it in the movie theater when I was about 17 or 18, and liking it. It was a long time ago and I only remember being creeped out by the sex scene (that they didn't show).
I may have to watch it again with the g/f since, I know she hasn't seen it.

Harold and Maude has some funny and interesting parts but, no one would call it a comedy.

Apparently no one thought to correct Wikipedia :idk:

"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harold and Maude is a 1971 American romantic dark comedy drama directed by Hal Ashby and released by Paramount Pictures. It incorporates elements of dark humor and existentialist drama."

In all seriousness, the humor is very subtle at times. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

But, is it as funny as Paul Blart Mall Cop? Sleewell wants to know. :nope:

Having never seen Paul Blart Mall Cop, I can't speak to that comparison.

I admit that it doesn't feel like a typical contemporary comedy because they don't hit you over the head with the humor. But, Harold's uncle who is in the military, his overly controlling mother, and the Priest who tries to talk him out of marrying Maude cracked me up. Granted there are lots of attempts at humor that fall flat, but I laughed enough to make up for those moments, in my opinion.

I just added it to my Netflix queue... it's in the #2 position, just below Troll 2
I saw it in 1977 so, it will almost be like seeing it for the first time.

Ya it's a great movie and a classic, with a lot of clever lines...some funny, and some pretty damn meaningful. I love the soundtrack too.

Agreed, the soundtrack is one of my favorite aspects of the movie.
