I signed up with Linode.com and got my own server for $5/mo, which gives me a certain amount of storage & bandwidth per month. Will be tracking to see if this is feasible. My hope is that it'll suffice and I can avoid paying hijack fees to the hosting companies and maintain all of it on my own - plus let me build additional services for hosting website/blog, hosting my personal domain/email, and more.

It's definitely not for the faint of heart, but I have a couple of excellent teacher-friends, and I'm learning pretty fast.

so how does that work with the bandwidth?
everytime someone opens this thread - it is another download against your bandwidth?
that sounds like it could add up incredibly fast - and I guess is why some sites don't allow hot-linking.

Yep, unless the forum caches the image. That's why I'll be cutting down my image sizes.

Besides, I'm not like Pablo, Bill, or Mike. My threads (comparatively) generate little traffic - so, as long as I'm not dumping big images of mine onto their (and other popular) threads, I'm probably ok.

Yeah, but I think you aren't counting the unregistered traffic this site gets.

I'm not sure the 'views' counter counts all those clicks.
(obviously Billy would know) - but there are often 10 times the amount of visitors viewing as there are members.

Couple of things...

For $5/month they're certainly not giving you your own server, they're giving you shared hosting, which is basically a folder in one of their servers. That's fine for the most part though, especially for a personal website hosting.

To actually have a dedicated server or even a virtual server it would cost you at least 20x that amount but you don't need it as long as you're not running any databases.

I doubt that the traffic here would exceed your bandwidth if you're only posting pictures.
But limited bandwidth sucks anyway, there are companies that will give you unlimited bandwidth for not much more money a month.

The company that hosts this site's server also offers shared hosting.
I think their shared plans start at $7 with unlimited bandwidth. So the extra $2 is worth you not having to worry about it.

It is my own server. Install whatever flavor of Linux they have available (and it's a bunch). Likely running on virtualized (shared) hardware backend, but I'm siloed off from their other customers.

Minimal config (which is what I chose) is 1 CPU, 25GB of SSD storage, 1GB of RAM, 1TB transfer (bandwidth use), 40Gb in/1Gb out. I can up it to next tier, which doubles most of those specs - $10/mo, 1 CPU, 50GB storage, 2GB of RAM, 2TB transfer, 40Gb in/2Gb out. I can set up any software on it that I please, create user accounts, etc. It's more work, because I have to manage everything (including security) on my own, but that's cool.

ok so it's 1 cpu core, not a whole cpu.. definitely not dedicated. Some clever marketing wording there though, but yeah it's shared hosting. Still, it should be more than enough for a personal website.

Thanks man. That was my dad's 2nd trip to FLA/KSC with me back in 2008. But, this time, the trip started as a visit to his doctor, who had recently moved to Tampa Bay. My dad was going to him for his cancer treatments (clinical trial), to deal with his melanoma... Luckily, that's over, and we have some fantastic memories of that trip.

As you might have guessed, I'm a total space geek, and my dad is pretty much the main cause of that. So cool to be able to spend time with him discovering that place.
