I guess I'm officially old now.

In the company I work at, I started in my twenties and I'm currently 41. In the new role I took, I'm surrounded by mid-20 year old peers. I've encountered that two of the girls I work with were born the year my wife I dated, they think "cult classic" means watching occult films, and I'm roughly 10 years younger than their dads. On the last point, I couldn't imagine having a 20+ year old kid since I have an almost 5 year old (but that's just because I never wanted kids).

It just seems odd when they start talking about movies and it's shit I never heard of. They'll get on topics of scary or funny movies and when I throw out an example they have no idea what movie I'm talking about. I have to do the math real quick and most of the time they were 3 or 4 when a movie came out. So strange, but makes me appreciate being around people my age.

Dude I totally feel you on this. I'm 34 still working on my undergrad. A couple years ago a professor mentions they used to use the movie Clueless as an example but most people in the class hadn't been born yet, took me a second to realize I was probably at least 10 years older than everyone.

Another time some rando and I were quoting from dumb and dumber and rando's friend says she hasn't seen that movie since it was before she was born.

Yeah dude, when it comes to movies and age it's crazy. Especially Star Wars! One of the gals I work with had never seen any of the movies and the other said she just barely remembers the ones with the "teddy bears." I will say though, music seems cross a lot of age barriers. I now have to reassess what to say when it comes to conversations with these younger kids so I'm not feeling like:

I don't have this at work but I have it all the time at home with my wife (she's 28, I'm 44).

The other day I was watching this 911 documentary and she stops by and said she remembers school was out early that day and her dad had to pick her up because of it.
It dawned on me she was 11 when it happened. It's odd lol

But other than those odd "whoa" moments, it's fine. We get along better than I did with anyone close to my age.

yeah... i work amongst mechanics ranging from 26 to 62. i actually have more in common with the YOUNGER dudes than i do with the 30-40 year olds, funny enough. we have one dude in his 50's, and he's just.. well... a PITA.. but i think that's him more than his generation. the younger ones seem more curious and willing to learn-- the mid 30's dudes are kinda sour and jaded. the older cats are just generally teflon and easy.

culturally though, they're all from a different planet being trade types. i'm the only one with a college degree and i may's well have two heads in that lot anyhow. but i DO notice that the 30-40 year olds have a VERY weird sense about them and they are not particularly good problem solvers--- SMART-- but in a very strange way. they can LOCATE data instantly, but are really bad at applying it practically. i suspect it's internet damage, more or less. but we're workin on it with them.

we've had some weird conversations, to be sure, about 'my generation versus theirs'. definitely about work expectations and relationships that would have me wanting to move to another planet.

but i'm not really gonna pick up the 'millenials are ruining the world' axe and start swingin, 'cause boomers sure weren't LESS wack, and there's tons of genx'ers who're just as fucktarded.
