Doing my first metal rehearsal in years tonight

And I am very excited! I have been wanting to do another metal band for quite some time, but just haven't had the time or people to pull it together.

Some friends/former bandmates from other projects and I started talking and we are going to give it a go. We picked some random tunes to start out with:
1. Metal Gods
2. The Trooper
3. Clean My Wounds
4. Mother
5. Powerslave

Obviously; nothing uber brutal or difficult to start out with (and in the case of Mother and the CoC tune; moreso hard rock more than metal). But really some familiar-ish tunes to get the ball rolling.

My initial concerns beyond the first wave of "oh this will be fun as f**k!" are:
1. What can we do with this? Booking old fart metal band is difficult as h#ll if not impossible and if you do get a booking; you aren't going to pull any real $ out of it. Also; at least some of the band members are going to want to do 4 hours worth in traditional gigging band fashion and I don't know if I (or we) have that in me.

2. Related to the above; I am going to have to figure out what the criteria for a "good" addition to a band of this type's setlist. I normally have to ask myself if a song is a dancer; but that criteria won't apply here

I'm over-thinking things as usual but very excited nonetheless  Any of you guys doing a metal band in a cover format? What are you doing with it and how well do you do? Any pointers?

I don't have much for tips or suggestions, but some of my previous bands would cover Overkill's version of Frankenstein. It always went over well and gave the vocalist a break.

Good luck!

Thanks DBN! I love Overkill and would love to do anything by them. Bobby's voice is higher register than what the singer in this band is unfortunately. Our other guitarist wants to do an Exodus song or three (you know, dancers  ) but pretty much the same boat :hmm:

We will probably try our hand at some originals if it continues. We don't really have any backup vocalists. I can do some stuff but not anything requiring talent

I'm doing my usual and putting the cart before the horse :nail: :pat:

Just go jam and see what happens. As long as it's fun, fuck it.

Or, to quote my old friend Jimmy McSwillabeer a.k.a. Jimaretto(after the liquer)........

"If it feels good, fuck it".

Indeed!

Tell you what; the Helixes of the world sure do put a sheen on things  Fired up the recto last night to practice the songs and while it sounded much better; the um, "nuances" in my playing sure were a lot more obvious

Same thing with my Torpedo Live. Initially I didn't notice it. But after a while it's unmistakable. I can't not hear it and have honestly been struggling with it. I'll deal with it because I have no choice. But I am jonesing for some real speaker time. There is nothing like the real thing.

My playing is always, um; thoughtful as I have to account for what the dumb-a$$ trumpets and the associated pickup require as far as picking accuracy, blah blah blah.

But playing reverse gallop riffs on a roaring half stack with no noise gate sure as f**k points out the obvious with a quickness

Do not smile
Try doing what James Gandolfini did- put some small rocks in your shoes to give you that authentic ornery vibe
Make sure to properly stretch out those finger horns because you need to flash that every chance you get

Classic metal, so mids  :D

The only thing that sucks is that I am playing through whatever "backline" is at my friend's jam room. Instead of the 5150iii or IRT or Recto I'll have by tomorrow

That's why my bands did Frankenstein, it's an instrumental.

Or should I say......... INSTRUMETAL!
