What rig is needed for this?

I’ve got a new iMac desktop sitting in one of my closets unused.
I’m building a “beat laboratory” in one of the rooms in my house that has all my music crap laying around.
Anyways, I am looking for a recording system that can yield good results that can take advantage of an unused iMac. Beyond that, all I have right now is a fostex mr8 and a Sm58/Sm57.
My needs will need to be able to record the 3 halfstacks and a drum set I’ll be buying soon. 5-6 piece, two overhead mics. 2 mics for the amps.
I also have a Yamaha keyboard that I can DI.
I don’t know anything about DAW’s and all that, so if you have recommendations, please explain as if you’re talking to your dog. Simple and slow.
Don’t want to spend a bunch of money since I play around mostly as a hobby but want it good enough’ish to record full songs and play them on a stereo without sounding like ass.
Thoughts?
