What y'all making? My sister distilled some absinthe and I want to get weird tonight.

When I visited Germany some years back my buddies band was sponsored by Absinthe. Which is apparently the REAL deal vs the absinthe that comes into America. But idk all about that tbh. Anyway they had boxes upon boxes of this shit in their Jam room. I know they would light them on fire and put sugar in it first.

But by the time my friend and I were the only ones still drinking it, he's like fuck that pussy shit, just drink it. So we swigged off that bottle the rest of the night..... And yes, we got fucking weird that night. Definitely a different high than regular alcohol..

BTW, I'm a fan of absinthe, but I've never liked it in ANY cocktail. Drink it with some ice or ice water.

I also leave out the sugar. It doesn't add anything positive or take away anything bad, IMO.

Also, the whole fire thing was a gimmick introduced by one of the czech brands, and it was made popular by Johnny Depp. Don't do it. You're just going to wreck the flavor by burning essential oils.

Gene, I kinda figured you'd be sipping on the stuff. I haven't tried it straight, maybe I will tonight I have no desire to add sugar.

I had the sugar cube ritual performed for me at a French restaurant... it was amusing but, not amusing enough to have it done again.
A sugar cube is put on a perforated spoon that is suspended over a glass of absinthe. A samovar drips water on to the cube, slowly dissolving some of the sugar into the glass.
Once the glass is topped off with the sugar water, the samovar is turned off and the booze is consumed. Blecch!!!! Absinthe is already sweet enough!

The story behind the banning of wormwood is interesting.
Around the time of WWI, there was a blight that wiped out the grape crop in France. It was so bad that, wine production was brought to a halt... for, I believe, at least 2 years?
As a substitute for wine, many people began drinking absinthe and it became very popular.
Absinthe became so popular that, when wine production resumed, very few people switched back to wine and the wine producers were obviously upset.
While the wine industry floundered, a man who had been drinking absinthe, murdered his wife.
The wine makers used the murder as an excuse to get absinthe banned, blaming the murder on the the wormwood.
This was enough to scare people back to wine and get absinthe banned, worldwide.
By the time absinthe makers started producing their product without wormwood, people had lost interest, were fearful and/or had regained their interest in wine.
Of course, it has since been proven that the small amounts of wormwood do not produce any hallucinations and so, the US un-banned the ingredient in 2007.

If you only have $30, Absinthe Ordinaire is decent.

Absinthe - add enough to coat the inside of the glass
1 1/4 oz. Rye Whiskey (you can use bourbon)
1 1/4 oz. Cognac
3 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
2 dashes Angostura bitters
I like to shake it with ice and strain

Yeah, that was my preference as well when I've had it.

I drank 3/4 of a bottle myself after about 10 beers....my wife said my eyes were rolling back into my head.....said some inappropriate stuff.......needless to say...she banned me from drinking it again.....lol

I don't mind it straight, with a drip of water. or with an ice cube melting......as long as it makes my lips tingle and it tastes like good anise, I'm good. Never bought into the hype and never had anything weird happen to me. I apparently sleep walk more on spiced rum than anything else, so maybe it triggers something in everyone's brain differently?

Lol, I was just on another site and read the Sazerac recipe not more than 5 minutes ago. Seems to me to be a way to ruin the pleasure of drinking either rye whiskey or absinthe neat or with just a splash of water.

Also, Sazerac barely qualifies as rye.

Sazerac brand rye whiskey is 51% rye, 49% corn mash, which is the minimum amount of rye in the mix to qualify as a rye whiskey. If it was 51% corn mash, 49% rye it would be bourbon, or maybe Tennessee whiskey.

Did I mention that I fell down the rye whiskey rabbit hole a couple of years ago?

Yeah, but high rye Bourbons are my favorite - the sweet taste of bourbon, with the spicier, bolder taste of rye.

1792 is my favorite at the $30 price point.

Funny, I don't consider bourbon to have a sweet taste. Seems more sour/woody to me. Japanese whiskeys are sweet. I usually like high rye content rye whiskey better because I like the spiciness.

My favorite that I've bought in a store is High West Double Rye, which is a blend of 2 year aged 95% rye mash with a 16 year 53% rye mash. The one that set me on this path is a artisanal one produced in I think Vermont to spec for a restaurant in DC. It's truly outstanding, but I haven't been able to find anything close over the counter.

For the longest time, you couldn't get any rye whiskey in my area.
Then, about 10 or 15 years ago, Jim Beam Rye started showing up on the shelves and I finally was able to make a real Manhattan.
Add a teaspoon of maraschino cherry juice and double the bitters, Manhattans are fantastic! One of my favs.

I once ate some wormwood and had one of the worst trips of my life.
