Making a menu choice at the drive through.

None of the above. The winning choice is muskrat.
The drake had to check out the commotion of the owl
dispatching the rat which took about 5 sec.
Stupid auto focus.

That's awesome! Pretty rare for a barred owl to hunt during daylight!!

By the way, Happy Belated Birthday Billy. I saw the thread way to late to jump in as I'm not as regular at chiming in with the threads of the day. I'm more of a every few weeks kind of a guy. Anyway, Happy Belated.
She was abandoning her normal nocturnal instincts as she had two owlets back at the nest to feed. Her nest is in a hollowed out tree about 50 yards into the woods. I purposely have avoided the area so that they have some privacy. From the sounds the owlets made early spring when she was perched and hunting, it sounded like two of them. These pics are from last spring when she would show up with an hour or two of daylight left. One morning we saw her perched over the pond about 10:30 am still hunting into the morning. It was striking to see her at that time of the morning on a sunny day. We did not see her much over the summer but have recently been seeing her again. Lately, right at dusk. We have great horned owls, and barn owls that I've seen but have yet to get photos of and others I've never seen.

Yeah, I figured that was the reason, but we're not in the nesting season now. These pics being from last spring makes total sense now.
It's a good idea to avoid barred owls areas during nesting season, they
will attack if you get too close to their nest.
Remember that Oregon park that had to install these signs? That was because of a nesting barred owl

Thank you for the birthday wishes

Thanks for the reply Billy. From a low post count guy to one with a count so high, it's hard to fathom. In that my posts and comments are very sporadic at best, and I sometimes go months without visiting, sometimes getting any comments at all is difficult at all of the forums I'm a member of.
I do appreciate your response as getting no comments is what makes me give up on many forums. I will never be one of those guys that has a post count in the thousands. My worst was HC at a post count of less than 10 after 16 years. My best was a now defunct guitar forum where I had almost 500 after 12 years. I'm a man of few words. What is to be said on many topics that has not already been said? When I do start a thread, it's usually one that has some pics and story and so again, I thank you for taking the time to comment to someone with such a lowly status post count. I know I shouldn't count you as your the Man, but I also knew you couldn't resist the owl post.
Thanks again.

Coming back from my amp tech's place friday night I scared up an Owl from the side of the road (Note: did not hit)
First time I'd seen one in a couple years.

That's a lie, last winter I saw Snowy Owls almost every day. They have started to come to this area in big numbers in late winter. I just forgot about them because they are always daytime sightings
