So I was listening to some old Rainbow tonight & thought Id see what I remembered of Deep Purple... I was never a big fan of either.
Well I was mildly surprised to see that they had newer albums. Steve Morse is now playing guitar, Don Airy keys, & other than that, its original guys.
So whada ya expect.. crap? I did....
Im actually very impressed with the material!
This is off one they did in 13

Never really listened to them, tbh. I dig that track you posted but can't say how different it is from their original stuff...

Who was the original guitarist, Blackmore?

Yes, followed by Tommy Bolin, Satriani for a brief period, then Morse who has been in the band since the mid 90s.

I really like the Now What? record a lot. They're not resting on their past glories like a lot of nostalgia acts are, it's a really good album.

Exactly! Most old acts record a crapy new album, then go out & play all their old popular tunes.
This stuff stands on its own. I knew Morse was a great guitar player, but I didnt know he'd play so well with this style. In fact EVERYBODIES playing seems top notch!

I was recently referred to this as the "best Strat tone ever".

I never really thought about it till now, but Blackmore did have one of my favorite strat tones. Instead of thin, cutting, clean, it came across as bigger, fuller & punchier, with plenty of & grind.

I never had any Deep Purple albums, just heard a few songs before.. but after listening to Rainbow & DP the last few days, Im finding some GREAT songs, & thats a great version of Mistreated! :thu:

Its not DP, but I love this song...

Not a big fan of the Steve Morse DP era, but I dug this song.

Deep Purple fucking rules

At least old Deep Purple does - I've honestly never listened to the new stuff. I need to do that

This is (IMO) a kick ass Deep Purple tribute album done by a lot of heavy hitters. Been jamming it a lot recently:
