I have the iRig pre which works. I have used an sm58 and a cad E2 Large Diaphragm Condensor.

They both sounded like shit.

THe iphone mic itself sounds fine if you play quietly, and back it off of the speaker. Better than the shitty preamp.

If you want an all in one solution that sounds fucking amazing, check out the zoom Q series. The Q2 was one of the best investments I've made in my music.

If you have one of the older iphones with the big charger port, I have one of those Tascam iM2 stereo condenser mics that plug directly in to it.

I'd sell it for cheap cheap

Tell them to not be a cheap ass and to buy a zoom Q series. I have one of the old non-HD versions and while the video is shitty, the audio is great. It was £100 5 years ago. I'm sure they go for peanuts used now. The HD model has much better video quality but like most of these devices it struggles in low light conditions.
