does anyone here listen to metal on vinyl?

Post by jnurp »

The reason I ask is that Im thinking of buying a decent vinyl setup and start listening to music on vinyl instead of mp3 and cds I have. I heard a few records being played at a gathering not too long ago and the sound quality was fantastic, I didnt get around to asking about the equipment but I heard that distinct vinyl sound and it really hit in a postive way. They were playing some 70's disco and funk and it was great. I was wondering if any of you have record collections and if you listen to metal on vinyl and how does it sound different than on an mp3/digital or a cd.

I have a pretty huge old school metal collection on vinyl. I rarely listen to it but when I do; it sounds really good. It is a low end turntable and I play it through a powered speaker; so the setup is really poverty per my normal methods  I can imagine a killer stereo would sound very nice indeed. I had an Onkyo system back in the day and it sounded massive  Vinyl is always going to sound better than sizzly cymbals on a 128K mp3 :freak: :D

I have some rare vinyl picture discs. Need a new turntable. My Thorens got trashed when I moved a few years ago.

Yeah, I do on occasion. I should do it more often.

On a somewhat related note my bands last album is supposed to get a vinyl release. We have to wait one year from our album release for us to do it. Per the current label's contract. Since we will be working with a separate label who specializes in vinyl

But I'm looking forward to the vinyl big time. I think it's a great medium for today. Nothing better than opening a big vinyl record and having that open in front of you and look at the lyrics, pics etc.

It depends on the recording and how it was done. A lot of the metal vinyl now is basically digitally recorded so it won't make a big difference or was ripped from a cd. If it was recorded with analog equipment then you might hear some things you haven't heard or noticed before.

Example: I have Emperor's Anthems to the welkin at dusk on cd and vinyl. No difference at all.

Oh man that is such a great album. Such an underrated album, its really a work of art.

I just ordered a few classic metal albums to see how they sound on vinyl. I picked up RTL, Peace Sells, Peace of Mind and also a few classic rock gems like Rumours, Hotel California and Are you experienced. i figure these are a great start to introducing music thru vinyl both to myself and my 14 year old daughter who happens to love really good music. She loves Alice in chains and Opeth, so I am patting myself on the back for good parenting skills :beavis: .
