Rock and Roll. Sometimes I just don't like it.

Post by JiveTurkey »

Pointless rant; but thought I would yap in here instead of dirtying up another thread. Hypocrisy admission of wearing stupid sh!t playing a cover band doing some tired a$$ sh!t as well

Some rock and roll just bores the living sh!t out of me. I dig certain classics (LZ, Sabbath, Floyd...) mainly because they were diverse even if they got pigeon-holed into one genre or another. There is just a strain of rock music, though; where it just puts me to sleep. No energy, no b@lls; nothing. I don't get any enjoyment out of it in any way.

I grew up in late 70s early 80s around early hard rock and metal as well as the MTV era. I dig the h#ll out of the obvious suspects (EVH  and all the obviously good rock and metal dudes) but stuff like old Foreigner, Bad Company, Reo Speedwagon; just boring to me. Yawn. City. :bor: I think I just like extremities I guess. Napalm Death, Duran Duran, NWA and Dead Kennedys it is

Anyone else feel this way?

Like all styles, it depends.

Pretty much all metal after 1990 sounds exactly the same to me. Barely musical.

Very true Pablo. There is a lot of post 90s metal that I absolutely love. Also a bunch of stuff that I loathe from that era.

I get it. I used to be pretty picky about music, but at this point in my life, I try to keep an open mind for all genres. I can appreciate something about any piece of music. :idk:

I like boring 'ol rock and roll. :idk:

I hate the vast majority of metal beyond the 90's and like about half of the metal through the 90's. I like new metal that sounds like 80's-90's grunge/stoner usually. Several bands are still holding that down.

But lately... outside of actually playing rock and roll what I'm listening to is way the fuck outside of rock and roll. It's weird. I still play rock and hard rock, but I'm listening to only God knows what the fuck.

I try to keep my mind open; there are just certain types of grooves that just make me snooze. Nothing that catches my ear; despite the obvious talent involved in the players and creation of said music, you know what I mean? It must be boredom Thursday

All very valid points Mike. I don't listen to the stuff I play outside of practice much, either  To be clear; this isn't a Metal Rules thread (even though it, for me, in general; does :beavis: ) Morseo just some things considered classic bore the living f#*k out of me as a listener. There are other things in the genre that would be considered garbage by purists yet maybe my pop sensibilities from coming up in the 80s helps me ignore the cheese :D I'm just pontificating at this point :snax:

I like me some Satcharoni but that's probably my leftover from the 80's cheeseball side coming out :D Even though dude is an absolute ripper when he wants to be.

I completely disagree with this thread. "Rock n Roll" and "metal" are huge umbrellas of different sub styles. If you think all modern music sound the same you're not looking hard enough. There is an incredible amount of new music out there for pretty much any taste, probably more than ever.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

This wasn't about modern music; it was about a thread someone posted of some boring a$$ old fart sh!t  There is plenty of new stuff; though I tend to gravitate towards older bands new stuff than new bands' new stuff  ; if that makes sense.

Sounded to me like you were saying there are certain sub genres of RnR you didn't like. Which is why I was saying I feel this way about most genres. For example, I like outlaw country, I detest pop country etc...

I'll buy that. A lot of the things I don't like are considered classic by others; just could never get the taste for it. I can find something good in pretty much every genre. Pop country and christian rock might be a little more difficult than others

Well in the OP you list some of the cheesy "hard rock" bands. Well yeah, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon are terrible. :D

About the only soft/yacht/cheese rock I can get into is Steely Dan, who I thought was gaffy as fuck for a long time but now I love.

When I was banging my sushi waitress she once was put in the mood by raw oysters on the half shell and some Steely Dan playing in a dim lit portside restaurant loft that overlooked the water. I'm sure the cocktails were doing their part too. But I learned then to respect the Dan.
