Does my interface suck?

Guys, I have a Kemper and some decent studio monitors incoming. At some point I'd like to get a taste of recording. I have an older M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I was thinking of using SPDIF which the KPA and Fast Track Pro have. Is this acceptable to start with?

Should be. I am using a 5+ year old Focusrite interface w/SPDIF with my Kemper.

It took me a couple years to learn and realize that nearly any interface will do what you need so long as it's compatible with your computer and the drivers function as they should. Rock on.

Cool. I played with Reaper a year or so ago. No complaints really, but I think I'll try the free Pro Tools and see how I like that.

The good thing about using digital connections is that it takes the analog to digital conversion out of play. If you are using your monitors with the Fast Track, then the only conversion would be from digital to analog. So, even if you had crappy pres in your interface, they are out of the equation. The only concern then would be your D/A converters. That all said, I am sure you are fine! I am using a Steinberg MR816csx into an RME HDSPe RayDAT. My MR is an older unit, but the converters are highly regarded in its price range. I don't run a Kemper, but I did run an Eleven Rack via S/PDIF while I was still using the FireWire connection.

Hopefully that clears up something

Well shit. Looks like it's not supported in Windows 10

Looks like I'm in the market for an interface.

I chose that interface because it has a SPDIF in so no conversion if I'm just doing a simple single input. Admittedly I have no idea what I'm doing yet.

I went from using a standalone recorder & transferring when ready to mix, to building a new PC & getting a cheap Behringer, to a new Scarlet 2i2, to my Alesis IO 26. Noticeable difference between each unit! The Behringer X302 seemed to sound ok aside from the flat blappy inputs. The 2i2 seemed skinny & weak, & my IO26 sounds amazing... So, IMO, stay away from the low end, make sure yourre prospective unit has a future with updated drivers. Read reviews & study up as much as possible.

This just keeps getting better. New Kemper and monitors. New interface and headphones incoming. Wife just ordered me a new iMac. It's the 21" with i5 processor. Should be more than adequate for what I'm doing.
