Laney IRT Studio Issues

Post by Epirocker »

Hey all. So I dunno if this has been posted about before but I'm having a bit of an issue.
So from the subject line you know the amp I have. My issue is when I tried to use an XLR to DI into my Scarlett 2i2 interface, I lost all my tone from the amp. SO that sucked. Issue now is I have bypassed the interface completely and just USB'd the amp into my computer which took care of my tone issue and also clipping issue. However. My TV is my computer monitor and using headphones into my amp no longer allows me to monitor my recordings; as in, if I wish to layer a track I cannot hear the initial rhythm track to layer lead on top of it through the amp itself and using my TV for speakers has too much latency to be manageable. I don't have room for monitors but I don't think that will fix my problems either. If my interface wouldn't rob me of my tone this wouldn't be an issue.

Anyone have this problem with the amp or a similar problem with another?

I'm guessing Mike (M.Mike LX-R) will post in this thread, since he's got one of those IRT studio amps, and loves it. He's yer man :thu:

I think you need the interface to have ins and outs you can monitor through your software . I don't think the amp is a interface but I may be wrong . Still you may be able to solve the issues with the interface .

Did you use the software that comes with the 2i2? It's not the most intuitive program but it works to bring latency way down. If so you may have been monitoring the wrong signal like di by accident (?)

I think it's an interface/routing issue. Do you have cabinet emulation on when you go DI? You will need it until you start using IR's.

Could you be more specific?

Could you maybe show me what your setup looks like for reference?

If by source I have it on USB and not AMP. Is that the issue?

And for cabinet emulation are you speaking of the DAW I'm using or...?

yeah needs to be on amp. but there is a switch on the back of the IRT for cab emulation. That needs to be on when you run direct or you will "lose tone". Not having the source as AMP might also cause tone loss too. try those two things.

To be a little more specific on the issue. When I DI through the interface clipping is a huge problem and by tone I was meaning my distortion sounds like a cheap pedal instead of tube amp

yep so my guess is cabinet emulation switch would be causing that sound, cause that's what it sounds like to me when going direct without either that switch on or some IR's loaded into the daw.

Clipping is your interface and those 2i2's are notorious for having this type of problem. I can't help you in that regard except that maybe trying running the level on the amp as low as possible.

Also I found there to be way too much latency when using the IRT studio in USB direct mode. Nothing I could do would reduce it.

But regular XLR DI sounds better IMO anyway.

So all switches were on and the guitar track sounds better however clean is still clipping real bad so that's a bummer.

yeah, so you fixed half of the problem which was getting the IRT set up for sending a good DI signal. but the clipping is the 2i2 and there were A LOT of complaints about that issue with that unit. Bummer man... sounds like you're due for a new interface.

Truth. Any recommendations? Just doing bedroom recording for now obviously so I don't want to get too crazy.

Mackie blackjack. Small, basic, great preamps, and if drivers are an issue you can download ASIO4ALL for free with a simple google search and it runs it great. The Mackie is like $100. On my computer the ASIO4ALL runs the Mackie better and allows me to run with much lower latency than the Mackie driver does.
