Alright y'all! Got some pics from RawCabs! Here's pics of it so far. Shipping tomorrow. The front panel on this one will be stained. He's sending me two more to be covered with grill cloth and piping.
Pretty stoked.

For edification, here's the starting point...

Going to be using a dye on it. Hoping for a charcoal wash with darker grain and then either a light red or blue tint to it overall.
Even if it turns out mediocre it's still infinitely better than current state!!!

Going to grab some tack cloths, large mason jars and cheese cloths. Gonna get this bitch started! Tonight will be just wetting it and resounding the grain. Going to see if I can find some pine scraps to test stain colors.

Damn right! Figure if I get drunk enough I won't care so much if I do shit job! LOL!
The jars are for the water based dye. Easy to mix and store.

Drink a little, paint a little. That's what works for me!

So I am terrified to drill the fucking holes for my chassis in this headshell! Mostly because I am an idiot! LOL!
I have convince myself BEFORE even trying to measure it the I am going to ruin it!

Measure twice, cut (or drill) once

Yeah I hear you. Going to do all the drilling before staining it.
Should I stain the inside of the headship or just spray it flat black? Thoughts? Also, there are no vents up top. I have enough clearance and the back is open enough that I am not that worried about heat. Trying to decide if I want to add a small amp vent or maybe artistically drill some vents in the top.

YOu can use the inside of the headshell to test colors.. I would practice on scrap to get the general idea, but then do some test spots on the inside of the shell.. Prep it the same as you did the outside.. This way you can really see what you'll end up with, colorwise.. Then just spray the inside a flat black, or stain it really dark so the test spots will basically get covered up. If they dont by the chassis

Ah! Good idea. The plan is to do the black first and see how that takes. Then potentially sanding back to natural and hit it with either a purple or blue tinted gray wash. Nothing too nutty.
I still think ANYTHING is going to look better than the "current state" and think even just a charcoal wash would look tits. Going to be 100% win regardless.

Holey shit, Jer - whatever you do, don't go leaving the back of the baffle as raw wood. Remember the shitstorm that ensued with the Titan

Good luck to you, man. I've done a lot of cutting and assembling of wood, but finishing remains outside my skill-set. I'll be learning right along you in this thread

LOL! That's why I even posed the question! LOL!
I like EndTime's suggestion. I will use the baffle's to test color ideas. Once I decide on what I like, I will stain inside the headship and THEN commit to the outside.

If you wanna get real OCD about it, test the finishes on the bottom of the headshell, so it'll be covered by the chassis during normal use. You might could put a sheet of aluminum down over the whole bottom when you're done, to shield the works and cover up all the test swatches

So following EndTime's advice, I wet all the pieces and will sand in the AM.
Then off to Billy's to put the new tubes in the KK and hopefully coax him into helping me drill the holes for the D60's chassis. Thought about swapping the tubes in the D60 for 2 of the Winged C's from the KK...
Anyway, here's the wet pine. Love how the grain takes on a bit of red tone.

So here is 2 coats of black:

Here is a purple that needs help! LOL!

And here is a coat of black and a coat of purple

So far I have learned:
• Orbital sander = NO!!!
• I need more dye powder to really deepen up the black
• WEAR GLOVES
• Sand by hand
Watched a lot more vids this morning. I actually like the first black. With a hit of blue wash I think it'd look a lot like the finish I was going for in the "choose the cosmetics" thread. I have decided though that I want to stick with a deeper purple.
I think I'm going to do:
• Heavy black and then sand back
• Multiple coats of red
• finish with blue
Saw a guy do a burst for his first attempt and it came out pretty cool.
Anyway, off to Billy's!
