Got this 2001 PRS McCarty on a trade from one of the guys in The Dillinger Escape Plan. It had some war wounds and I wasn't into the Silver Sparkle finish, so I decided to sand it back, get new hardware, and make it anew!

I was surprised when I first got the guitar and looked at the binding and saw noticeable flames. It was definitely a risk, but I'm glad it is a half way decent top!

i would have said leave it, just because, fucking DEP, man!, but i had no idea they would have used such figured wood underneath

Yeah as soon as I saw the binding had some consistent flaming I knew the finish had to come off, haha.

Man my CE24 and SC245 both have what I bet are VERY sexy tops on them based on what I can see from natural binding. The SC has a very unique paint scheme so I would never rein but my CE24 may get one.

a really nice amber or amber burst finish might look good on that top, especially with all those dark spots

I had some Ebony Stain laying around and was curious how the flame would pop….now I don't know if I even want to start mixing green. Might just leave it! We shall see.

That ebony looks awesome as-is, but I'd bet with a really light, very fine sanding and another coat it'd just turn super dimensional.

Thanks fellas! I ended up sanding it back again so the ebony stain stays in the grain, and then staining it again, and then sanding it back. I'm going to do a black burst around the edges, then seal it. I'll probably do satin black on the body, neck, and headstock too!

I also got clear lampshade PRS knobs, and black locking tuners.
