wow can't believe there is no thread for Jimi Hendrix in the music section. ok here's the place to talk about all things jimi. personally i'm a huge fan and he's been a major influence on my playing. i really love his live material as he always just seemks to go with the flow and tries many things that aren't heard on the studio material.

Started playing guitar after hearing that long sustained note in Machine Gun from Band of Gypsies. Just had to learn how to make it scream. Never heard anyone play with such inspiration, conviction, & passion. Unlike anything I've heard of before.

I see on the forums a lot of people downplay his significance. He was unsurpassed for that time, amongst his peers, as the complete musician: guitarist, songwriter, performer, innovator, entertainer, lyricist, arranger, composer, singer, improviser, game-changer, experimenter, etc.

His use of the studio. Listen to House Burning Down thru headphones, the way he placed the sounds in the stereo field, panning the solos left to right, they sound as if they are passing thru your head. Check out 1983(A Merman I Should Turn to Be). His placement of all the layers of instruments, the effects, made the studio another instrument to get his statement across. I love hearing the placement of the instruments in the mix. A lot of music today sounds "Stereo center", not much panning, not much imagination,sort of stereo mono. You get the idea.

Sure modern guitarists may have impressive technic, but can they write a good song, are they versatile musicians, are they entertaining to watch, good performers, do they sing also. Not many fill the bill. Not many will have the impact on an art the way Hendrix did. Will they be remembered. You get the idea.

Was playing some Woodstock stuff the other night, with the ol Vibe & wah going.

Upped the "warble" on the vibe a bit, backed the drive down, detuned a haair & dicked around with some Isle Of Wight style "Hey Baby" & "In From The Storm" & "Easy Rider".



Would give my left testicle to achieve Monterey toan. My fave guitar tone in the world. That really rumbling "tremolo-like" thing he had going that night is to die for.

I like a bit of Jimi, but get fed up with out vocalist killing his songs on guitar just to piss our drummer off...

agree. i see some jimi bashing and a fair amount of "what's the big deal" myself. jimi paved the way for so much of what we take for granted on guitar these days. we wouldn't have guys like steve vai or joe satriani without jimi and i'm sure they'd agree (both have said as much in interviews). sure other guitar players have built on and greatly expanded on the many things that jimi brought to the table but he laid the foundation like no other guitarist in rock had or has since.

just heard the version of Hear My Train a Coming from his next album (due out march 5th) and it was awesome, can't wait for the new cd.

Huge influence for me. His rhythm playing is fantastic.

well just got the new album and gotta say overall pretty damn good. the 2 tracks where he was playing with other bands were fantastic. jimi could tear ups some r&b whhen he wanted. sure not all the tracks are complete or awesome but all are worth hearing.

interesting. I probably would've totally ignored the new album, but now I'll check it out.

I'll grab it eventually. I was under the impression that it was just alternate versions of stuff Ive already heard

well many tracks are but they are totally different takes from different sessions. jimi played with many songs in the studio and would rerecord them over and over til happy with them. often the tracks would have different musicians so would have a different feel. part of what's cool about these recent releases. you can follow the evolution of some of the songs.
