So I've been looking at passive attenuators for a while. The Weber MASS was the one I was leaning toward, but I didn't want to shell out full price for a new one. Well after waiting for weeks, one showed up on eBay but I got outbid. So I decided to try something else. Enter, the Output Tamer Attenuator. So I connected it up to my DIY X88R/ DIY JCM800 rack poweramp rig. It does what it's supposed to do and the high-boost switch puts back the perceived loss of highs at high levels of attenuation. At least for my amp, I don't find it to be a tone sucker at all. But this experience wasn't without disappointment. I'm finding that at least with my amp, cranking it up doesn't really improve the tone. It's just louder.

The guy doesn't offer models with extra outputs for recording. But seeing first hand what's inside of these leads me to believe one could build one with whatever extra outputs for well under $100. There's no magic inside, no mojo, no exotic components, just parts commonly available online if you know where to look.

Bottom line. I think $75 is fair and it's a nice little handmade attenuator that does exactly what it claims to do. It's got a 30-day money back guarantee too which is more than generous.

So if it fails and ruins an amp...he'll give you your $75 back?

I'd either:
A: Build it myself (especially in your situation where you actually have the knowledge and experience to do this well)
B: Buy one of the better known ones, new.
