Recording my first band this coming week...

It's actually my brothers reggae funk hip hop rock jam band. They're actually gaining a lot of popularity around NE Ohio, and I'm going to be recording/mixing a new 3 song EP for them.

I'm not charging them, doing it strictly for the experience. I have the capabilities to record an acoustic kit, but they're cool playing my Roland and triggering Superior Drums, so that will save some time/headache. I'm just looking forward to recording and mixing someone else, as I've never done it.

I'll post some progress clips on here.

Going to track the drums and bass on Thursday, then probably guitars. After that, I have keys and sax, followed by the two vocalists. Going to be a busy mix so it should test my lack of skills.

You should try to track basic guitar track at the same time , this will be all basic tracks then the other guys can come in separately when time allows also it couldn't hurt to throw down a scratch vocal at the same time as it could help the guys with the feel . Live basic tracks for all 3 songs in one day .

Normally I would just have them all there, but there are scheduling conflicts. I'm not too worried, they're a talented bunch, so I don't forsee any tracking issues. My main concern is mixing.

Good thing about sax is that if you get a good basic sound when tracking all you need is compression and it sits right in the mix. :)

Key is finding that one frequency range that each instrument sounds best in and cut everything else out. Like cut highs and high mids from the bass guitar, mids from the kick, lows from the snare, lows and low mids from keys etc.

And don't be afraid to cut/boost +-15dB on a certain frequency, if that's what it needs, that's what it needs.

Don't be a pussy, on our last album I boosted every channel 44,100dB at 34.7Hz, to get some solid low end going on.

Quite a bit of headroom you had on the mix then. :D

Yeah, that super low frequency shit is a headroom murderer.

Tracked the drums...just about done fixing any issues with those. Tracked half the bass, the bass player showed up with a broken bass so I fixed it for him (electrical work). Then he was reaaaally struggling to get through the material. Timing was everywhere...and he thought it was "ok". I felt like a dick, but I told him to go home, work on it for a week, and then come back (since they're new songs). I can't be arsed to spend days fixing that many timing issues. A couple/few...sure. Every part...pass. Especially when I'm doing it for free.
