midi/synth interface question (where you at, Loop?)

So i was debating getting a midi cable to be able to control a few free synth plugins i found. I have an old Casio CTK-650 with a midi out and a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB recording interface. My question is this: Would it be that simple?

Can i just hook a midi cable from the 'out' of the Casio into the 'in' of the Saffire and have my computer recognize it as midi data? There's a couple synth / autotune / vocoder / orchestra things i've been meaning to try out.

Yes.

The CTK sends Midi out automatically either on channel 1 or omni (all 16 channels)...can't remember which...so Channel 1 will work either way.

Whatever software instrument you're playing with the CTK...just set it to receive on MIDI ch 1.

then play.

Alternatively, most softsynths will also allow you to use your qwerty keyboard as a controller.

sweet! I'll grab a cable and check it out...

Any good free/cheap synth or strings plugins you can suggest?
