I have "A Dramatic Turn of Events," which is awesome, but are the other must have albums by Dream Theater?

Images and Words is the only one I've ever cared to buy, tbh.

Definitely the best. Great album front to back.

Metropolis II: Scenes From a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Possibly my favorite at the moment)
Train of Thought

Awake and Falling Into Infinity are my favorites. A lot of people hate Falling Into Infinity because it's kind of unusual for Dream Theater. It's not as over the top and shreddy for lack of a better word.

I really, really like that record. A lot.

But, as you said, it doesn't really represent them.

I think I like it precisely because of that. It's like they stripped away most of the show-off types of things from the songs and just let the songs stand on their own merits. They didn't overplay on that album. It also gets bonus points for Doug Pinnick and Derek Sherinian (sp?).

i've only ever heard 'images and words'

that being said... Just buy a symphony x album. Most Symphony X makes Dream Theater sound like music you'd hear at K-mart.

Images and Words is definitely the place to start. Really like Awake, too.

I still really like Dream Theater but I agree. Symphony X, Anubis Gate, and Redemption all do it better these days.

I never get why people compare DT to Symphony X.

In related news...I like pizza, but StarFox is a better game.

DT: Epic prog, with science-y passages, and lyrical cheese related to descentintomadness/science

SyX: Epic prog, with valhallaviking passages, and lyrical cheese about translucent steeds charging into in the mists of fiery battle.

It's like comparing Periphery to Dragonforce, on a less extreme level of variance.

Wow, that's even too geeky for me! And that's saying something.

Can't fight right, bro. Can't fight right.

Also, let it be known that I enjoy, very much, every band mentioned in this thread so far. Huge fan of impossibru music. Hell, I may have even been known to write some.

So much so. They are not the same thing.

That said, My DVD/BluRay movie collection is huge, and arranged by genre. I get really pissed when I can't figure out where to put the SciFi/Fantasy crossover stuff. Thor (Marvel) is a good example. So it just went in the trash.

Event Horizon is another. Alien is another. DAMMIT. They get to stay though. Because they're awesome.

Except when they aren't.

Dan Simmons needs to pick a genre too. Just sayin'. This classic lit crossed with sci-fi crossed with future fantasy thing has GOT to go.

It's a Dream Theater thread. What the hell did you expect?

Go to a DT show....find out where the Big Bang Theory characters were stolen from.

Now, the Dan Simmons thing only pisses me off so much because the fucker can write so compellingly. Right now I've got about a dozen books of his and have NO IDEA where to file them, but they're too fuckin' good to throw away.

CS Lewis: Out of the Silent Planet/Perelandra/That Hideous Strength. SciFi? Fantasy?

I saw DT with Big Wreck in a tiny club on the FiI tour. Great show but LaBrie kept complaining about how small the place was.

My people!
