So I am going to do a volume test tonight

I am going to take my 50w AVT 1x12 combo to practice. Obviously, it's not a very loud amp, being 50w SS. I want to see if the band can turn down to the point where we can clearly hear the guitar with a smaller amp.
I will keep the head in the truck just in case though

get a free db meter app for your phone and compare that to a normal practice
seems like if you raised it up enough you should be able to make it work

The best bands I've seen recently have been loud, but not crazy loud.
Some bands just know how to EQ and fit in their sonic spaces.
Great tone is pointless, if you don't fit into a mix.

I'm gonna guess that - yes - you will be able to get to a point where you can here is.
BUT - it will sound like ass at that point.

Yeah I think I will have it on top of a 4x12. We have some smaller places we want to gig at but we are normally just too loud for these venues. It would be cool to see if we can adapt to a lower volume.

I know. It's not a matter of practicality but we are just running out of places to play. We are sick of the places we currently gig at and there are some other cool bars we could play but the volume would be an issue. Our band is not that heavy but it's really LOUD... I normally have the DSL100 at 12-1 o'clock to get over the drums nicely. That is a lot.

I kinda miss the days when you knew if you were going to see a rock band you wouldn't be hearing right afterwards if you didn't wear plugs. Seems like those days are long gone nearly everywhere now.
me too

Those venues still exist, but they tend to not be in bars and taverns.
larger venues are still loud, and some of the house/basement venues are still pretty loud.

very true.
I suppose that's why the tiny lunchbox/low wattage amps/attenuators/dirt boxes are so popular these days.

well.. yes and no, here in L.A. there are still some venues that allow us to play at our regular volume but the problem is we already played them all way too many times

and want to branch out to other venues now.

I tried that with one of the 1st Valve State 1x12 combos. By itself, it was fine, but in the 15x15 room, the drums over rode it. I think it may have been 60 watts (?). Drums had dampers on them, and still killed it.

Me too.
I had a VS65R. It was 65 watts and simply not loud enough.
On the other hand, my little Mesa Studio .22+ is plenty loud with the volume at 4.5. I really like that little amp.

Yeah. The one I had was a killer sounding little amp, but was useless in a live band setting. I had to turn it up to the point of it sounding bad, just to try to keep it from getting burried.

i can play down to a whisper with the attenuator. limited to how quiet the drums can go.
