Consider Some Fancy Wiring Options

So, just because I can, here is another picture of the Yamaha RGX1212S that I scored for $100:

The body and neck are in great shape but the wiring has been messed with over the years. I have already rewired as close to spec as i can by reinstalling a push/pull coil tap for the bridge pickup. The three mini toggles are just on/off for each pickups. That seems like a waste to me since it already has a 5-way selector.

Here's my thought: What if I were to install single-coil sized humbuckers in the bridge and neck, and then wired the toggles for coil tap? I don't have much experience with those pickups so I don't know how good they sound tapped. Any thoughts?

Parallel would probably be more useful than single coil, less of a volume drop compared to series, and it would still be hum free.

Yarbicus, my cheapy Peavey Raptor has a SC sized HB in the bridge and someone installed a switch for it. I'm not sure what brand it is, but it looks like a super cheap one and it sounds ok.

It certainly would be sort of cool to have all the pickups tappable.

They really wired in 3 mini-toggles just to act as on/off switches? That seems like a lot of effort for not much purpose.

I'm an electronic mod nut...so I'd wire the mini switches for a coil-cut, a phase reversal (for the middle pickup), and series /parallel. I've modified several of my guitars with this type of setup.

This was my first thought as well.

I like the sound of that! Got a wiring diagram?
