It's rock and metal for people that wear neck scarves in the summer, stocking caps year round, sweaters with the arms cut off, and hipster glasses even if they don't need glasses.

EDIT:
"stock hats" = :freak:

Post Metal

Post Rock

Generally no vocals, long songs, huge builds, atmospheric, a butt ton of effects, etc etc

Metal had feelings, like anger, hate, rage, and then everybody got off the drugs and alcohol and started whining to their therapists about how nobody understands them anymore and went nuemo. I actually like the way that pronounces as a single word. Nuemo.

Metallica should just accept it and go all in nuemo. They'd probably be happier, and people could stop bitching about Pappa Het no longer being able to punk out the vocals 300 nights a year.

That post-rock example you posted Ruiner sounds like it's a bunch of white guys who are too lazy to go out and get some pussy and would rather play EQD. What the fuck. This is a thing?

The Russian circles thing was decent though. If you're gonna fuck around like this it should be heavy sounding imo.

I just posted Explosion In The Sky because i assumed you've heard of them before. They're one of the bigger post rock bands but i can't say i'm a huge fan.... however, they have some build ups that will blow your mind (especially live).

This is one of my favorite post rock bands at the moment:

There's a lot.. Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You are all notable ones that are fairly well known.

Either way, i'm more of a post metal guy... i like the atmospheric slow builds that get into some heaviness.....

Although the music i want to make is going to transition into more stoner rock / doom sensibilities i hope..... i don't think that's really been done much.... but who knows.

 it's really easy to make fun of any genre... and just like any genre... there's good and bad and it always leans heavily towards bad. Just gotta find the good stuff and there's plenty out there.

Post rock has reached djent status in level of played-outness these days :cop:

Actually I really love a lot of elements of post rock/post metal, but with a lot of bands (even some of the big ones in the genre like EITS), the songwriting is just lazy. It gets very predictable and often doesn't go anywhere. My favorite kind of music is elements of post rock mixed with more driven, structured songwriting. Like sleepmakeswaves. :cop:

nice sn change!!!!

post rock if you want to get into the thick of it stems from people who were in to rock and roll and metal, but saw that something with a bit more substance could be made with those tools (gain, effects) and started to make a progressive version. one could say prog rock kind of started it. but you see elements in a lot of things. even someone like coheed and cambria imo skirts the line between prog and post, or whatever.
theres post punk too, which followed a similar progression from punk (think at the drive in: still loud, still energetic and defiant, but a lot more than 3 chords and shitty amps)
the extremes of it are the bands in question, your mogwais, explosions in the sky, etc. it sometimes has metal tinges (russian circles), djent stemmed from it, sometimes its punkish (these arms are snakes, the blood brothers)

it all comes down to apparent sincerity and execution whether it will be entirely awesome or suck entirely.

I can see the appeal. Pink Floyd did some of this kind of thing, only better than any of these guys are trying to.

It all seems kinda lazy to me :idk: like, we need Santana playing melodies over some post-rock to complete the formula.

well they were progressive, in my opinion. long before the necessary ingredients for "post rock"

if these dudes are chefs, pink floyd invented sea salt and black pepper

This conversation reminded me of something i heard last night.

Listen to the riff at 1:48 on this Rush song (i marked it)...... what song and band does it sound like? (people reading this thread will probably pick it out)

I think this is where I sit with the whole post phenomenon. Something like Russian Circles even, where seemingly everybody goes gaga over them. Sure, the first ten minutes of them you ever hear you're like, "holy wow, how did I miss this before now?" Ten minutes later you're like, "OK, I get it. Can we move on?" Ten minutes after that I'm like, "FIND IT MOTHERFUCKER! FIND THE GROOVE! FIND IT!"

I think I like all these scattered genres popping up though. Because all of them have a little something to offer even a fairly traditional song writer, like myself, if you're willing to pull the good elements out of the mud. I think I tried really hard to dig post metal just because the ideas behind it intrigue the hell out of me, and seem like they should be great ideas. But I have yet to hear anybody do anything with them that has any sort of staying power for me. Give me a traditional thrash album and if it's good I can listen to it ten times in a row and still love it. Give me even the best of the best of post-metal and I can't face pushing the play button for a second time in a two week period.

Basically shit douchebags play at hall shows for a crowd of 15-20 15 year olds, who are friends of the bands who rented out the civic center to put on the "show". Short lived bands that only last a couple of months.

What I used to call "myspace bands" .
