Interviewer: Can you talk about how you might have written an amazing song like "Tiny Tears"?
Auto-pilot. I mean number one I appreciate the compliment. I very much appreciate it but it's all auto-pilot. I think in light of taking it as a compliment, I think it's fair to point out I don't think musicians are responsible for the music. I think you just follow it and it irritates you until it doesn't and when it doesn't it's right. I don't think about how many bars it goes or whatever. I just listen to it and go, "That part's wrong. Why is it wrong? I don't know."
Interviewer: At a point in time, you must have a feeling when a song is right.
I just stumble around in the dark until it's right. I really like the idea that my worth as an artist is more about how much effort I put into it rather than the songs themselves because I think the songs just evolve and appear regardless of you and regardless of your connection to it. You can force a song as much as you want but there's a way it's gonna be right and there's a way it's gonna be wrong.
I think as an artist you're just privy to things based on your experiences that clue you into melodies and rhythms. Then your job is to articulate it. So I don't know how the stuff gets written. I mean I don't write it. I just try to fart around with it until it no longer bugs me. But I appreciate it, dude.
