I was kind of the same way. Around 2011 someone sent me a link to one of his live performances on YT. I had an epiphany of sorts and never looked back. Next to Hendrix, he's my favorite player. Check out "Ghost Blues". Great doc.
Rory Gallagher kicks ass!!! Way, way back, a friend turned me on to RG... it was so far back, that the cloths they're all wearing in this vid looked normal. I love his slide playing. He really flows.

Weirdest serendipitous wtf ... I was watchin' Rory vids just last night.
And it reminded me when I was a kid one of the dudes who hung out in our bong circle was a complete Rory fan boi and had an uncanny ability to play any Rory (and Joe Perry, Nugent, Zal Cleminson, Rod Price) lick. He was sick. He would listen to a song a couple times, grab a guitar and within a few minutes would have it nailed, and I'm not talking trivial little licks but long lines. I often wonder what became of him. He was a crazy guitar talent. And kinda weird.
tl;dr: Rory was amazing and influenced a lot of players, weird that he doesn't get mentioned very often.
You anted up a narcissistic boil and a conniving witch. Thanks America. Signed, the world.

I knew I'd hear from you! Fuck. Yes! His slide playing is soooooo good!

Nice Cusack movie reference, too.
On topic: That's amazing about your friend! I've been learning some of Rory's stuff, but he flows much differently than me. I need a little more Celt or someting. Honestly I think Rory could have been bigger, but he didn't want it, according to all I've heard.
Gallagher has always been one of those guitarists who I keep meaning to listen to, but forget to for some reason or another. I really need to just sit down and really listen to Live at Montreux all the way through one of these days.

Thanks for the link. Pretty cool site. After watching a bunch of videos, looks like he managed to make his AC30 sound as full as the Stramps and Marshalls. Heard somewhere he used a rangemaster with the tone rolled back on his pickups to achieve the thickness. Check out the Live in Europe album from '72. I also know he used that Tweed Bassman quite a bit. On some of the songs it sounds like he's running it simultaneously with one of the Brit amps.

YT has a bunch of it. He actually played Montreux quite a few times. The last being 1994 when his health was deteriorating.

I actually have that DVD with a bunch of his Montreux appearances. Like I said, I have been meaning to give his stuff a shot for a while.

Totally agree. His influence didn't stretch as far stateside as most of the English guys', but his talent is (at the very least) on par.
Real cool guitarist! I guess blues was his mother-tongue so to speak but I used to love his rock playing as well. 'Edged in Blue' ..kinda says it all about him. What a song!
