This Bonamassa quote is surprisingly self aware.

Post by Telephant »

We had 10,000 people,” he says. “That’s what I call ‘proof of life.’ There’s always talk about the blues dying out, but it won’t. You just have to make it a little different. That’s where the Black Keys and Jack White have succeeded and I’ve failed. They’ve actually convinced college kids that they’re listening to hip music—but it’s just blues twisted a new way—while I’m playing for the college kid’s parents.”

He also has a third Dumble he is apparently keeping. Some jazz fusion with the LP > Dumble (no pedals)

the black keys are successful because they play EQD.

but yeah, true statement from Joe B. it's cool that at least he can see what's up. but I don't really see his music quite the same as the black keys or jack white. sure its all based on the blues but it seems like his stuff is too polished and safe while they are a little edgier and take more chances. plus I think they have created more of their own sound whereas Joe just always seems to regurgitate what others have already done even though he is probably a more technically proficient guitar player.

Joe Bonamassa and John Petrucci should have a boring-off.

But yeah, great quote.

While I only really enjoy his work in Black Country Communion; I cannot deny that the motherf*cker rips on the guitar.

My only issue with Joe is that his tone is way too polite. Its warm to a fault. I can't listen to BCC and think of it as convincing rock music if the guitar tone doesn't have some damn bite to it

I actually think hes completely not aware.. lol

Comparing himself to more raw alternative type artists while saying its "blues based" therefore drawing a comparison to it, is kinda absurd. We can almost draw lineage to the blues in any guitar based music if you want. I mean some have downright have ripped off the blues and sound way "edgier" than Bonomassa. If he wants a younger audience, then dont play tired covers or originals that sound like a tired cover..

I don't know anything from Black Keys, but yeah, Joe Bonamassa is really quite the cliche player, it's like he's blues' Zakk Wylde.

But I still dig some of his tunes. :)

I don't think he's comparing himself to these guys, quite the contrary, "where they succeeded and I've failed" is more of a contrast than a comparison.

I think this is exactly what he's getting at. They took the blues (in Jack White's case, Delta blues) and twisted it into their own thing, meanwhile he's still rippin' out covers of Steppin' Out (not that that I blame him  ).

JB also needs to team up with a strong songwriter. He writes the most forgettable stuff ever. I sometimes think he just writes songs as a vehicle for him to solo over.

Did you ever check out Black Country Communion? Pretty solid classic/hard rock, imo.

Yeah I have their records. They're good I can't say anything bad about it, but still not quite strong enough IMHO...
Keep in mind I was a Glen Hughes fan way before I even heard of Joe and coming from that perspective, well... Hughes + Blackmore or Hughes+Iommi or even Hughes solo are better than Hughes+Bonamassa..

So it's a highlight for Bonamassa fans, but not so much for Hughes fans.. they're good albums though.

Not to mention pretty sure Hughes was heavily involved with the writing of a lot of those songs... Hell, the songs he sings on may have been written just by him, but I never looked that much into it.
