Had a Single Recto that I didn't like at all.

I've always wanted a Maverick or Heartbreaker, but I don't think either of those do what I'm really looking to do.

I'm not into brootz at all, but my band is heavy.....sorta space rock mixed with thrash punk (:idk:)

What I've been using. Is either my JTM45 with pedals (Bogner Red, The Elements, Super Collider) or my Egnater TOL100. Like a mean fuzz-stortion but with clarity.
I like these amps because they have strong mids and have great clean tones.
I like midz.

A Mark III or IV maybe? The DC and F series still have a bit of Rectifier character in them.

That said, the DC-10 is a great amp. Basically the tone of a Mark IV for Mark III cash.

A Mark series amp could work for that, but I am biased and love my MKIV.

From your description, it sounds like a Heartbreaker would be ideal.
I've been using one for the last few months, and it kicks ass for everything this side of metal.

It's also ridicilously flexible - you can make either of the two channels clean or high(ish) gain and each has its own character. When Channel 1 is set up totally clean, it's straight Fender. Great amp.

Of course, you can never go wrong with a Mark series amp - if you need good cleans AND higher gain, check out a IV. the Mark III is absolutely the best thing out there for the brootz, but the controls scheme means that you'll have to compromise somewhere.

My answer is always Mark IV.

From what I was reading on teh webz, the heartbreaker sucks. lol.............that's pretty much always kept me from snagging one.

Hmm.....don't know much about the Mark IV....I'll have to look it up.

I don't really need A LOT of gain, but the right kind of gain.
I have a hard time finding that middle ground....something clear, but gainy enough to rock.

Mark IV has a ton of gain on tap. That said, you don't have to dime the Gain and Drive knobs. There's a ton of useable gain from light breakup to chugga chugga metal.

This. About the highest level of gain I use on my MKIV would be like that on Kid Charlemagne. What is great with the MKIV is that with all of the options, you can really dial in a unique lead tone if you have the patience.

Honestly, I think that Rectos are a lot more versatile than they get credit for. I used mine at practice for the first time on Friday, and while I thought I had it dialed in right, it sounded lame. I ended up just randomly turning knobs until it sounded good in the mix. Now it sounds incredible, and not at all what you expect a Recto to sound like. Very crunchy, chunky, like being punched repeatedly in your face and balls simultaneously. The way I have it dialed in right now, it shits 100 pound turds all over my 5150.

I've had two single rectos now, and the gain side is alright.....a great tool for recording and achieving a really great mix.


...but in real life, I just can't get along with them. Maybe an EQ in the loop or something would have helped, but it just sounded so synthetic to me.

since you're into those honky AM radio through a soup can tone with even more mids in the loop, id recommend a mark IV. they nail that one in spades

I don't know what the interwebz says, but I think the Heartbreaker is a great amp for classic rock-type sounds. It's a little saturated but isn't muddy, it has a good amount of gain but isn't fizzy (as long as you're not expecting it to be a 5150), and has good response to picking/muting. It's not super tight, but not super loose, either. It's a good balance. I really like the one that I'm using.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but yes, I like a bit of a mid hump compared to a mid scoop....or even flat.

You'll be pleased to know that I'm experimenting with backing off the mids, so I can pump up the volume.

sounds like a good fit for me, actually.

I've never played a 5150.

If it sounds anything like the Mesa BottleRocket pedal.........I'm in!

I wanted to use the BottleRocket as my main dirt, but it hummed so bad, I couldn't use it.

On top of that, the V-twin has always appealed to me too....but I heard they have a delay between channels (similar to the single recto HATE THAT).

I know this'll seem like I didn't read the OP or any of the replies, but fuck it.

Tremoverb. Why? It's a fucking dual rec. Yes. BUT! It's got a dark, smooth voicing, it's not a nasty fizzy wall of nu metal like some perceive dual recs to be. And it can get tones all the way from REM to Radiohead to the Verve to Incubus, it's got the blues mode which is lower gain and pushed mids (Bro, I heard you like mids). But in any mode if you turn the gain down and mid knob up, it's anything but scooped.

I was looking at the F, DC, Nomad because of price.

all are sub-$750 usually.

I haven't looked at the Tremoverb, because I thought it would be similar to the Single Recto.

Probably could have made the Single work for me in a band, had there not been a delay between channels.

You can play country on a Recto II if it's tweaked correctly.
